Hello, this is the Alabama Rare Bird Report for Sunday, December 28, 1997.

HIGHLIGHTS:  Red-throated Loon, Greater White-fronted and Ross's geese, Sandhill Crane, Buff-bellied Hummingbird, Sage Thrasher, Lapland Longspur, and Evening Grosbeak.

A SAGE THRASHER was discovered at Ft. Morgan 12/27.  It was seen in the brushy area just below the wall south of the fort.  Birding is allowed in this area, but please do not disturb the residents in the adjacent houses.  Feedback would be appreciated.

The Wheeler NWR CBC 12/20 produced several interesting birds.  At Limestone Bay, 38 GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE and one ROSS'S GOOSE were spotted, as were 26 SANDHILL CRANES.   From I-65 north of the Tennessee River, go east toward Huntsville on I-565.   Take the first exit to Mooresville, turn right at the next road, and go about a mile to a dirt road on the left with a boat landing sign.  Go another mile to a track on the left with a yellow gate.  This is the cemetery area, which gives good views of the north part of the bay.  A telescope is very helpful here.  The cranes were still present 12/27, though I do not have more recent information on the goose flock.

A few LAPLAND LONGSPURS were seen on the Wheeler count 12/20 in the fields just west of Limestone Bay, and many were spotted at nearby Swan Creek WMA that day.   Other unusual CBC reports included two GRAY CATBIRDS, four ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLERS, and, especially, a YELLOW WARBLER.  A BLUE-HEADED VIREO lingered 12/14 at the Wheeler visitor center off AL 67.

The RED-THROATED LOON was relocated 12/17 on the AL 69 Causeway just west of Guntersville.

The Birmingham CBC 12/27 produced an unusual wintering BALTIMORE ORIOLE.  For information call Helen Kittinger at 205/967-9324.

EVENING GROSBEAKS have returned to feeders in Hollins south of Sylacauga.  Call Mary Wilson at 205/839-5155 for information.

One BUFF-BELLIED HUMMINGBIRD remains at a feeder in Montrose on the Eastern Shore of Mobile Bay.  Call Nancy Moore at 334/928-9950 for viewing information.

The following may be called for information: on birding in Alabama, Greg Jackson at 205/987-2855; about the Alabama Ornithological Society, Charles Kennedy at 334/382-5737; about the Birmingham Audubon Society, Ann Miller at 205/879-7709; about the Shoals Audubon Society in n.w. Hello, this is the Alabama rare bird report for Tuesday, November 18th.

An immature HARRIS'S SPARROW was discovered on the 11th at Lakeland Farms near Marion, though I have no feedback on subsequent attempts to find the bird. Go about a mile south of the overpass of Perry Co. 45 on AL 5 in Marion and turn back to the right at a sharp angle on Pryor Road. Turn left in a short distance on Perry Co. 20 and go approximately 2 miles to a large white house on the left. Take the next left in about a 0.5 mile on a dirt road and drive south to where a stump filled pond is visible on the right. The bird was seen along the road. Feedback would be appreciated.
