Hello, this is the Alabama Rare Bird Report for Saturday, February 20, 1999.

HIGHLIGHTS:  Tundra/Trumpeter swan, Gr. White-fronted Goose, Common Merganser, Lesser Black-backed Gull, Cape May and Wilson's warblers, and Lapland Longspur.

The adult LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL was seen again 2/16 at Wilson Dam.

At Key Cave NWR west of Florence, three LE CONTE'S SPARROWS were noted again 2/7.  Go west from town on AL 20 towards Savannah and turn left on Co.  2 (Gunwaleford Rd.).   In 4.0 miles turn left on Co. 223 (just past Bubba's Grocery) and go 1.5 miles south to Co. 204.  Turn right and go 0.6 miles to a small parking lot on the left overlooking a pond; check the field near the pond.  Up to two SHORT-EARED OWLS were seen again 2/15-16 from the parking lot midway along the northern boundary of the refuge.

The male CAPE MAY WARBLER continues east of Florence.  Call Shirley Wayland at 256/757-2467 for information.

Two COMMON MERGANSERS were seen again 2/16 in the Tennessee River a couple of miles east of Waterloo.

Five LAPLAND LONGSPURS continued at the golf practice field of Calhoun College 2/6.   From US Alt 72 northeast of Decatur, go north on US 31.  Turn right at the light near the Hardee's and drive about a half mile to the golf practice field on the left between two ball fields.

Two SANDERLINGS continued 2/6 at Beulah Bay in Swan Creek WMA, and a female WILSON'S WARBLER was spotted that day. One LAPLAND LONGSPUR was seen here 2/5.  From the light at Calhoun College, go north on US 31 and take a left at the WMA sign. The road will turn sharply right and then left, then you should take the dirt road left just before a small bridge.  Go one mile and turn right, parking at the gate at the road end.  The warbler was near the gate. Go beyond the gate and take the first trail right to the bay for shorebirds and waterfowl.

Two GR. WHITE-FRONTED GEESE were seen again 2/14 at the Marion Fish Hatchery in Perry County.  North of Marion, take AL 175 southeast from AL 5 to the hatchery.

A first-winter GLAUCOUS GULL was seen 2/6 at West Point Dam just across the line in Georgia, but was not seen 2/7.  On 2/6, a TUNDRA/TRUMPETER SWAN was spotted in the bay just north of CR 222 in the Rocky Point area.
