Hello, this is the Alabama Rare Bird Report for Monday, March 30, 1999.

HIGHLIGHTS:  Eared Grebe, Am. Golden-Plover, Short-eared Owl, and Red Crossbill.

At the Marthaler Lane ponds near Leighton in eastern Colbert County, an EARED GREBE and 14 AM. GOLDEN-PLOVERS were seen 3/28.  Go west from Leighton on Co. 22 and turn north in a couple of miles on Marthaler Lane.  Go about a mile to the ponds along the road beyond the RR track.

A minimum of 237 AM. GOLDEN-PLOVERS was seen 3/21 at the Woerner Turf Farm in Lowndes County.  Take Co. 29 through Lowndesboro from US 80.  At 4.8 miles from US 80 turn right at the sign for the farm. In 3.0 miles the paved road becomes dirt.  In another 1.5 miles you reach the farm entrance on the left at a 90-degree right turn.   Please do not walk or drive on the grass at this or any sod farm.

Seven AM. GOLDEN-PLOVERS were seen 3/22 at Ft. Morgan near the fort.

An alternate-plumaged EARED GREBE was discovered 3/25 in the bay beside the Shell Mounds on Dauphin Island.

An adult Bald Eagle was at Meaher SP on the Mobile Causeway 3/21.  The LONG-BILLED CURLEW is still at the Battleship, and four AM. GOLDEN-PLOVERS were seen 3/25.   Blakeley Island had few birds 3/25.

Many shorebirds were seen in the western Bayou La Batre pond 3/25.  Just north of the drawbridge in Bayou La Batre, go west on Little River Road.  Where the road turns sharply left the second time, take the dirt road straight about a half mile to the diked ponds.  Do not drive on the dikes. 

A SHORT-EARED OWL continued through 3/17 from the parking lot midway along the northern boundary of Key Cave NWR west of Florence. Go west from town on AL 20 towards Savannah and turn left on Co.  2 (Gunwaleford Rd.).  In 4.0 miles turn left on Co. 223 (just past Bubba's Grocery) and go 1.5 miles south to Co. 204.  Turn right and go 0.6 miles.

RED CROSSBILLS are nesting in Talladega NF.  Call Bill Summerour at 256/435-4730 for details.

The next AOS meeting is 4/16-18 at Dauphin Island.

HIGHLIGHTS:  Am. Golden-Plover, Short-eared Owl, Scissor-tailed Flycatcher, and Red Crossbill.

HIGHLIGHTS:  Ross's Goose, Short-eared Owl, and Lapland Longspur.

A few migrants are appearing, but few rarities have been reported lately.

At Key Cave NWR west of Florence, three LE CONTE'S SPARROWS were noted again 2/7.  Go west from town on AL 20 towards Savannah and turn left on Co.  2 (Gunwaleford Rd.).   In 4.0 miles turn left on Co. 223 (just past Bubba's Grocery) and go 1.5 miles south to Co. 204.  Turn right and go 0.6 miles to a small parking lot on the left overlooking a pond; check the field near the pond.  Up to two SHORT-EARED OWLS were seen again 2/28 from the parking lot midway along the northern boundary of the refuge.

A ROSS'S GOOSE continued 2/20 just east of  Brown's Ferry Nuclear Plant at a pond on the corner of Nuclear and Cowford Roads.

Six LAPLAND LONGSPURS continued at the golf practice field of Calhoun College 2/22.   From US Alt 72 northeast of Decatur, go north on US 31.  Turn right at the light near the Hardee's and drive about a half mile to the golf practice field on the left between two ball fields.

Red Crossbills are nesting in Talladega NF.  Call Bill Summerour at 256/435-4730 for details.
