Hello, this is the Alabama Rare Bird Report for Monday, April 19, 1999.
HIGHLIGHTS: Eared Grebe, Ross's Goose, Black Rail, Upland and Buff-breasted
sandpipers, Wilson's Phalarope, Iceland Gull, Black-legged Kittiwake, Scissor-tailed
Flycatcher, Black-whiskered Vireo, "Brewster's" Warbler, and Red Crossbill.
The AOS meeting this weekend at the coast produced large numbers of migrants and several
interesting species. Rarest of the lot were two gulls, unfortunately only seen by
their discoverers. A BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKE was spotted at the point at Ft.
Morgan 4/14, but was not seen later despite many attempts. A first-year ICELAND GULL
was reported from the Dauphin I. - Ft. Morgan ferry by one party 4/16 both in the morning
and afternoon, but could not be located subsequently. Further reports of either of
these species would be appreciated.
The ROSS'S GOOSE continued this weekend at Fairhope in the small pond at the municipal
beach park.
A BLACK RAIL was reported from the Dauphin Island airport marsh, and a SCISSOR-TAILED
FLYCATCHER was at this site 4/16. Among the many warblers at the Dauphin I. Shell
Mounds was a "BREWSTER'S." There were scattered reports of BLACK-WHISKERED
VIREO.
Five UPLAND SANDPIPERS were at Ft. Morgan 4/15.
Three BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPERS were spotted 4/14 at the Baldwin Co. 12 sod farms east of
AL 59. Do not walk or drive on the grass at this or any sod farm.
Many shorebirds and waterfowl were in the western Bayou La Batre pond this weekend,
including an EARED GREBE and two WILSON'S PHALAROPES. Just north of the drawbridge in
Bayou La Batre, go west on Little River Road. Where the road turns sharply left the
second time, take the dirt road straight about a half mile to the diked ponds. Do not
drive on the dikes.
RED CROSSBILLS are nesting in Talladega NF. Call Bill Summerour at 256/435-4730 for
details.

The first-year BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKE discovered at Ft. Morgan at Mobile Point 4/14 was
not seen later that day nor today. The BLACK-WHISKERED VIREO evidently has left the
stables area. A WHITE-WINGED DOVE was banded 4/14 but not seen today. Five
UPLAND SANDPIPERS were present just southeast of the fort today.
The ROSS'S GOOSE continued through today at Fairhope. It is at the municipal park
