Hello, this is the Alabama Rare Bird Report for Saturday, May 22, 1999.

HIGHLIGHTS:  Olive-sided and Scissor-tailed flycatchers, Swainson's and Mourning warblers, and Lark Sparrow.

When possible, blocks from the DeLorme Alabama Atlas will be given after the site description, with the page number followed by the block.

An OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER was seen 5/20 on the west slope of Sand Mountain near Scottsboro.  On the south side of the river, take AL 40 about halfway up the slope to the power line crossing.  The bird was feeding from the top of a dead tree about 150 yards down the power line cut.  [DeLorme 20-E4]

A MOURNING WARBLER was heard 5/18 on the Dancy Bottoms Road in Wheeler NWR near Decatur.   Take AL 67 northwest from I-65 and just before the bridges turn left on a gravel road with a gate.  The warbler was found about a mile down this road, near the second sharp right turn. [DeLorme 18-G4]

A pair of LARK SPARROWS continued through 5/18 near Decatur.  From AL 67 at a traffic light in Priceville turn north on Bethel Road.  Cross Upper River Road at a stop sign and continue north on Bethel Road.  They were last seen in a corn field before Bethel Road intersects Truck Trail at the refuge boundary.  Earlier one or two birds were found by turning right (east) on Truck Trail, going east to the second 90-degree bend in road to left.  Look along the road within 50 yards after the bend; two pairs may be present in this general area.  [DeLorme 18-G5]

A SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHER was discovered 5/18 near the Lark Sparrow spot.  After Bethel Road leaves AL 67, turn right on Upper River Road, go about 1/2 mile, and take the gravel Old Branch Road on the left.  The flycatcher was perched on the telephone wires about 100 yards from Upper River Road.  [DeLorme 18-G5]

LARK SPARROWS have returned to the Red Bank area south of Wheeler Dam, near Mt. Zion Church.  [DeLorme 17-D10]

A SWAINSON'S WARBLER has returned to the woods beside the Wheeler NWR headquarters building off AL 67 northwest of I-65.  [DeLorme 18-G4]

A MISSISSIPPI KITE was seen 5/8 at the Collier Peninsula on the refuge south of the Tennessee River.  From Upper River Road take Mussel Camp Road toward the river.   At the first intersection, take Truck Trail east to the first cable barricade on right.  Park at the cable and walk north toward the river. In about 100 yards is an open field where the bird was soaring over the field and the surrounding woods. [DeLorme 18-G5]

A pair of SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHERS has returned to Finley Island  Road off US Alt 72 west of Decatur.  They are well past the railroad tracks on the chain link fence at the Amoco Corporation main building.   [DeLorme 18-E3]

Two pairs of SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHERS have returned north of Huntsville.  Go north on US 231 and go west on Grimwood Road at the light. Continue until just before reaching the 4-way stop in about 3.5 miles at Murphy Road.  The birds have been seen north of the road, and a new nest appears to be under construction on a power pole. [DeLorme 19-B7]

A good place for viewing DICKCISSEL and GRASSHOPPER SPARROW is nearby at the Alabama A&M farm.  Go east from US 231 at the light (road is called Walker Road in this direction) and turn right into the farms in about a half-mile.  Please get permission to bird first by calling Mr. Nall at 256/828-0270 or through Ken Ward at 256/837-5646. About 20 BOBOLINKS were seen at the farm 5/15.  [DeLorme 19-B8]

A MOURNING WARBLER was singing at a private residence in Mountain Brook 5/16.   [DeLorme 31-E6]

SWAINSON'S WARBLERS have returned to the B,E,&K trail in Hoover.  Take the Acton Road exit on I-459 east of I-65 and soon park in the day care center parking lot on the right.  From the south side of the lot is a gravel road.  Walk past the gate and bird the trail along the river.  [DeLorme 31-F6]

SWAINSON'S WARBLERS have returned to a site in Bibb County.  They are about 0.25 miles before the intersection with Bibb County 80, on a dirt county road between AL 25 and Bibb County 80.  [? DeLorme 36-F2]

Two SWAINSON'S WARBLERS were found recently in southeast Montgomery County. They are located one mile east of US 231 along a 0.4 mile stretch of Co. 074 at the Dry Creek crossing.  [DeLorme 45-H10]
