SPECIAL NOTE: Temporarily call rarity information to Bob Sargent at 205/681-2888 or
Ann Miller at 205/879-7708.
HIGHLIGHTS: Scissor-tailed Flycatcher, Swainson's Warbler, Lark Sparrow, and Red
Crossbill.
NOTE: When possible, blocks from the DeLorme Alabama Atlas will be given after the
site description, with the page number followed by the block.
At least two pairs of LARK SPARROWS continued through 5/31 near Decatur. From AL 67
at a traffic light in Priceville turn north on Bethel Road. Cross Upper River Road
at a stop sign and continue north on Bethel Road. Turn right (east) on Truck Trail, going
east to the second 90-degree bend in road to left. Look along the road within 50
yards after the bend; two pairs appear to be present in this general area. This is
also a good spot for DICKCISSELS. [DeLorme 18-G5]
A SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHER was seen 5/31 on Bethel Road, about a mile north of the AL 67
traffic light in Priceville. [DeLorme 18-G5]
A pair of SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHERS has returned to Finley Island Road off US Alt 72 west
of Decatur. They are well past the railroad tracks on the chain link fence at the
Amoco Corporation main building. [DeLorme 18-E3]
LARK SPARROWS have returned to the Red Bank area south of Wheeler Dam, near Mt. Zion
Church. [DeLorme 17-D10]
A good place for viewing DICKCISSEL and GRASSHOPPER SPARROW is at the Alabama A&M farm
north of Huntsville. Go north on US 231 and turn east at the light at Walker Road;
turn right into the farms in about a half-mile. Please get permission to bird first
by calling Mr. Nall at 256/828-0270 or through Ken Ward at 256/837-5646. [DeLorme 19-B8]
Two pairs of SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHERS returned nearby in May, though they were not
relocated 5/23. Go back across US 231 on the road now called Grimwood Road. Continue
until just before reaching the 4-way stop in about 3.5 miles at Murphy Road. The
birds have been seen north of the road. [DeLorme 19-B7]
RED CROSSBILLS continue to nest in Talladega NF east of Anniston, and have young birds at
present. Go east of Heflin on US 78 for about seven miles and turn left on Co. 61.
Stay on Co. 61 for six or seven miles and turn right at the Coleman Lake sign. Take
the next right on FS 500 in a short distance. Go about a mile to a small parking lot on
the right. Walk east a few feet on the road to the Pinhoti Trail leading north.
Follow this up the hill about 200 yards and watch for flagging tape on a tree to the
right. This is the beginning of a series of flagged trees which will lead you to the nest
tree; the nest tree is flagged with 2 strips of white tape. The nest is at the very top of
the tree; a scope is helpful here. [DeLorme 33-A8]
An ANHINGA was seen in late April s.w. of Tuscaloosa, at a heronry which has been good for
the species in previous years. For directions, call Bob Reid at 205/879-1935.
[Delorme 35-C9]
SWAINSON'S WARBLERS have returned to a site in Bibb County. They are about 0.25
miles before the intersection with Bibb County 80, on a dirt county road just east of
Pondville, along Blue Girth Creek between AL 25 and Bibb County 80. [DeLorme 36-E3]
Three WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS were seen 5/31 at the southern end of the Marion Fish
Hatchery, on AL 175 n.e. of Marion. Please do not drive on the small dike roads
here. [DeLorme 36-H3]
Two SWAINSON'S WARBLERS were found recently in southeast Montgomery County. They are
located one mile east of US 231 along a 0.4 mile stretch of Co. 074 at the Dry Creek
crossing. [DeLorme 45-H10]
A SWAINSON'S WARBLER was located 5/22 on Autauga Co. 66, where it crosses Bridge Creek in
the Autauga County WMA about 1.5 miles from the intersection of Co. 57 & Co. 66.
Another bird was located on Co. 66 about 1.3 miles farther east, at the base of a
hill just before a clear cut to the south. [DeLorme 44-A5].
Another SWAINSON'S WARBLER was found 5/22 on Autauga Co. 61 about 0.6 miles north of the
intersection with Co. 66, along a small creek. [DeLorme 45-A6]
Eight DICKCISSELS were in a field near Autaugaville 5/16. Take AL 14 west from
Prattville to Autaugaville. Turn left onto Autauga Street. The field will be on the
right in 0.8 miles. [DeLorme 44-D4]
