Hello, this is the Alabama Rare Bird Report for Thursday, November 25, 1999. HAPPY
THANKSGIVING!!
HIGHLIGHTS: Gr. White-fronted Goose, Ross's Goose, Eurasian Wigeon, Franklin's Gull,
Black-legged Kittiwake, Short-eared Owl, Western Kingbird, Scissor-tailed Flycatcher,
Henslow's, Le Conte's, and Lincoln's sparrows, and Lapland Longspur.
NOTE: When possible, blocks from the DeLorme Alabama Atlas will be given after the
site description, with the page number followed by the block.
A FRANKLIN'S GULL and an immature BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKE were seen 11/14 at Margerum in
western Colbert County, but I have not received further updates. [DeLorme 16-D3]
A male EURASIAN WIGEON has returned to Wheeler NWR at the visitor center observation
building. It was seen 11/22 in late afternoon. [DeLorme 18-G4]
Two GR. WHITE-FRONTED GEESE, two ROSS'S GEESE, and 31 SANDHILL CRANES were seen11/20 at
Limestone Bay in Wheeler NWR; one ROSS'S was seen 11/22, but no White-fronteds or cranes
were found that day. Go east from I-65 north of the river, and take the first exit
at Mooresville. Turn right twice and just before the road ends, turn left at the boat
landing sign. Go about a mile to a gate on the left and walk to the shore in the
area of the cemetery. Best light is in the afternoon. [DeLorme 18-F5]
The BROWN PELICAN was found again 11/20 at Decatur, this time at the boat harbor on the US
Alt 72 causeway just northeast of town. [DeLorme 18-F4]
Six LAPLAND LONGSPURS were found 11/22 at the usual site at Calhoun College near Decatur.
From US Alt 72, go north on US 31 and turn right at the light near the Hardee's.
Go about a half mile and check the golf practice field on the left between the two
ball fields. [DeLorme 18-E4]
A SHORT-EARED OWL has returned to Key Cave NWR west of Florence, and three LE CONTE'S
SPARROWS were seen here 11/21. Go west from town on AL 20 towards Savannah and turn
left on Co. 2 (Gunwaleford Rd.). In 4.0 miles turn left on Co. 223 (just past
Bubba's Grocery) and go 1.5 miles south to Co. 204. Turn right and go 0.6 miles to a
small parking lot on the left. The owl was seen 11/21 in a field near the dry pond
in the center of the refuge, near the last (easternmost) bluebird box. The sparrows were
in the field in the extreme northwest corner of the refuge. [DeLorme 16-D5]
The Guin sewage plant has been productive recently, with a ROSS'S GOOSE 11/14 (but not
subsequently), and HENSLOW'S SPARROW 11/21. For information, call Jud Johnston at
205/487-4111. [DeLorme 22-G4]
There have been several recent sightings of PEREGRINE FALCONS in downtown Birmingham near
the top of the AmSouth-Sonat Building at the intersection of 5th Avenue N and 20th Street
N. The favored perch is on the east side of the building, just below the roofline at
the NE corner. A convenient viewing point is an alley entrance on the east side of
20th Street, between 5th and 6th Avenues N. [DeLorme 30-E5]
About 50 HORNED LARKS have been present recently at the southeast end of the Birmingham
airport. [DeLorme 31-D6]
Birds recently at the Woerner Turf Farm in Lowndes County included KING RAIL, an AM.
GOLDEN-PLOVER, many HORNED LARKS, a MARSH WREN, a LINCOLN'S SPARROW, and 40 LAPLAND
LONGSPURS. Take Co. 29 through Lowndesboro from US 80. At 4.8 miles from US 80 turn
right at the sign for the farm. In 3.0 miles the paved road becomes dirt. In another 1.5
miles you reach the farm entrance on the left at a 90-degree right turn. Roads are
slick here in wet weather; please do not walk or drive on the grass at this or any sod
farm. [DeLorme 44-E4]
A WHITE-WINGED DOVE was seen 11/22 and 11/24 at the private Greenville Country Club.
Call Annabel Markle at 334/382-8572 for information. [DeLorme 51-D9]
A WESTERN KINGBIRD was seen 0.5 miles north of the Battleship entrance road on power lines
11/13. A dark ibis has been seen frequently in the roadside ponds on Blakeley Island
in the last two months; this bird, unless two very similar birds have been involved, has
been variously identified as both GLOSSY and WHITE-FACED. The last report to me was from
11/16. Be careful of heavy traffic on this road. [DeLorme 62-C/D4]
PLEASE NOTE THAT PERMITS MUST BE DISPLAYED WHEN VISITING THE DIKED PONDS AT BLAKELEY
ISLAND. CARS WITHOUT PERMITS ON THE DASH WILL BE TOWED!!!
A LE CONTE'S SPARROW was in the grassy strip on the south side of Ft. Gaines on Dauphin
Island 11/13. [DeLorme 64-B4]

Hello, this is the Alabama Rare Bird Report for Wednesday, November 10, 1999.
HIGHLIGHTS: Brown and White pelicans, Gr. White-fronted Goose, Franklin's Gull,
Short-eared Owl, Western Kingbird, Scissor-tailed Flycatcher, and Lincoln's Sparrow.
NOTE: When possible, blocks from the DeLorme Alabama Atlas will be given after the
site description, with the page number followed by the block.
At Swan Creek WMA in Limestone County, the BROWN PELICAN and15 AM. WHITE PELICANS were
relocated 11/7, and 20 LONG-BILLED DOWITCHERS were identified. Unfortunately, the
main gate to the West Dike Road has been locked recently, requiring a long walk.
From US Alt 72 east of Decatur, go north on US 31 past the GM plant and turn left at the
sign for Swan Creek WMA. You will go west, then north, then west again, and before the
small bridges should turn left on a gravel road, which is gated now after a few hundred
yards. At one mile from the pavement turn right, continuing to the gate at the
end. Walk past the gate and turn right to reach the shore. Until the West Dike
Road gate is opened, an alternative is to drive farther on the paved road and turn left on
Dairy Road, leading to the west side of the bay; this option is best in the afternoon.
[DeLorme 18-E4]
Five GR. WHITE-FRONTED GEESE had returned to Limestone Bay in Wheeler NWR 11/7. Go
east from I-65 north of the river, and take the first exit at Mooresville. Turn
right twice and just before the road ends, turn left at the boat landing sign. Go
about a mile to a gate on the left and walk to the shore in the area of the cemetery.
Best light is in the afternoon. [DeLorme 18-F5]
A SHORT-EARED OWL has returned to Key Cave NWR west of Florence. Go west from town on AL
20 towards Savannah and turn left on Co. 2 (Gunwaleford Rd.). In 4.0 miles
turn left on Co. 223 (just past Bubba's Grocery) and go 1.5 miles south to Co. 204.
Turn right and go 0.6 miles to a small parking lot on the left. It was hunting over
a field west of the pond in the center of the refuge. [DeLorme 16-D5]
At the Woerner Turf Farm in Lowndes County, KING RAIL, SORA, three AM. GOLDEN-PLOVERS,
about 100 HORNED LARKS, many MARSH WRENS, and several LINCOLN'S SPARROWS continued
recently. Take Co. 29 through Lowndesboro from US 80. At 4.8 miles from US 80
turn right at the sign for the farm. In 3.0 miles the paved road becomes dirt. In
another 1.5 miles you reach the farm entrance on the left at a 90-degree right turn.
Please do not walk or drive on the grass at this or any sod farm. [DeLorme 44-E4]
Four FRANKLIN'S GULLS were spotted 11/5 on the Polecat Bay flats just east of Blakeley
Island; this area is viewed, with caution, by parking just beyond the last exit ramp of
I-10 West before the tunnel. Another FRANKLIN'S GULL was on the flats east of the
Battleship, as was a LONG-BILLED CURLEW. [DeLorme 62-C/D4]
Two WESTERN KINGBIRDS were seen 11/5 about four miles east of Ft. Morgan, and a
SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHER was near the fort. [DeLorme 64-B4/5]

Hello, this is the Alabama Rare Bird Report for Monday, November 1, 1999.
HIGHLIGHTS: Brown and White pelicans, White-faced Ibis, Marbled Godwit, White-rumped
Sandpiper, jaeger sp. (on the GA/AL line), Clay-colored and Lincoln's sparrows, and
Chestnut-collared Longspur (Pensacola).
NOTE: When possible, blocks from the DeLorme Alabama Atlas will be given after the
site description, with the page number followed by the block.
Shorebird and waterfowl conditions continue to be excellent at Swan Creek WMA in Limestone
County; on 10/31 these included a BROWN PELICAN (likely the bird seen two weeks ago at
Florence), 15 AM. WHITE PELICANS, three BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS, and 65 dowitchers (probably
Long-billeds). >From US Alt 72 east of Decatur, go north on US 31 past the GM plant and
turn left at the sign for Swan Creek WMA. You will go west, then north, then west again,
and before the small bridges should turn left on a gravel road. Go one mile and turn
right, continuing to the gate at the end. Walk past the gate and turn right to reach
the shore. [DeLorme 18-E4]
At the Woerner Turf Farm in Lowndes County, KING RAIL, SORA, MARSH WREN, and four
LINCOLN'S SPARROWS were seen 10/31. Take Co. 29 through Lowndesboro from US 80.
At 4.8 miles from US 80 turn right at the sign for the farm. In 3.0 miles the paved
road becomes dirt. In another 1.5 miles you reach the farm entrance on the left at a
90-degree right turn. Please do not walk or drive on the grass at this or any sod farm.
[DeLorme 44-E4]
A jaeger, possibly Pomarine, was spotted 10/31 in Georgia waters at West Point Lake.
It was seen from the Shaffer Heard Campground on the east side just north of the
dam and information center. [DeLorme 40-E4]
A WHITE-FACED IBIS was studied along the roadside ponds on the Blakeley Island road 10/28.
Please use caution when birding this area due to heavy traffic. Habitat in the main
Blakeley ponds, visited by permit only, was poor that day. [DeLorme 62-C4]
A WHITE-WINGED DOVE was spotted 10/27 in the field south of Ft. Gaines on Dauphin Island,
and MARBLED GODWITS and RED KNOTS were again found on the nearby rock jetties.
[DeLorme 64-B4]
At Ft. Morgan, a CLAY-COLORED SPARROW was near the houses south of the fort 10/28.
[DeLorme 64-B4]
At the ponds near the entrance to the Magnolia Springs landfill, a WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER
was seen 10/28. No gulls were at the landfill. [DeLorme 63-G7]
A Chestnut-collared Longspur was reported 10/31 at Ft. Pickens near Pensacola. This bird
was feeding at the west end of the roadway that goes past the fort. Go to the
fishing pier and go to the left (west). This road follows the wall; as the road turns back
to the left park at the bathrooms. Walk on top of the perimeter wall south towards the
gulf. The bird was feeding beside the roadway between the bathrooms and the bunkers.
