NOTE:  When possible, blocks from the DeLorme Alabama Atlas will be given after the site description, with the page number followed by the block.

Birding at West Point Dam on the Alabama-Georgia border 1/31 produced several rarities, some of which may be seen at times in Alabama territory (though the dam and most of the lake is in Georgia).  Reports included an adult RED-NECKED GREBE and first-year ICELAND, LESSER BLACK-BACKED, and GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULLS. Feedback would be appreciated.   [DeLorme 40-E4]

A WHITE-WINGED SCOTER was at Colbert Ferry Park on the Natchez Trace Parkway 1/23.   [DeLorme 16-C4]

Several LAPLAND LONGSPURS were seen again 1/22 in the fields near Key Cave NWR west of Florence.  Go west from town on AL 20 towards Savannah and turn left on Co.  2 (Gunwaleford Rd.). In 4.0 miles turn left on Co. 223 and go 1.5 miles south to Co. 204.   [DeLorme 17-D6]

An adult LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL was discovered 1/6 at Wilson Dam, and was seen through 1/18 at Shoal Creek Marina north of the river on US 72 near Killen.  [DeLorme 17-C8]

Just to the east at Wheeler Dam, a PACIFIC LOON was seen irregularly through 1/8 in the river below the dam.   A first-year LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL was found at the dam 1/16.  [DeLorme 17-C10]

At least two ROSS'S GEESE were found again 1/6 in the large goose flock on Limestone Bay in Wheeler NWR; one Ross's was seen here 1/17, as were 13 GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE and 45 SANDHILL CRANES. [DeLorme 18-F5]

At least 44 LAPLAND LONGSPURS were noted again at the Calhoun College golf practice field 1/16.  From US Alt 72, go north on US 31 to the light and turn right.  Drive about a half mile and look at the short grass field on the left between the ball fields.   [DeLorme 18-E4]

The EARED GREBE was seen again 1/8 from the AL 69 causeway at Guntersville. Over 150 GREATER SCAUP were at Guntersville 1/15.  [DeLorme 25-A10]

A TRUMPETER SWAN continues at the pond near the nursery on Valleydale Road in north Shelby County, west of US 280.  This bird has appeared previously, and may be from the reintroduction programs in the Upper Midwest or from a local collection.  [DeLorme 31-G6]

At least two SHORT-EARED OWLS continued 1/22 in Autauga County at dusk.  The birds are on Autauga Co. 21 just east of Autaugaville.  Go south on Co. 21 for about three miles where a model airplane field is on the left.  The owls have been seen
just south of the field,  and fly across the road and along a tree line west of the road.  [DeLorme 44-D4]

At Eufaula NWR, 27 SANDHILL CRANES and the male VERMILION FLYCATCHER continued through 1/21 at the Julian Dusi overlook platform.  Birders are asked to not go beyond the platform but to look from the platform itself.  [DeLorme 54-B5]

An adult female BUFF-BELLIED HUMMINGBIRD is at the home of Ann Biggs-Williams in Brewton (phone: 334/867-2445).  [DeLorme 57-F10]

A second-year male CALLIOPE HUMMINGBIRD is at the home of Sarah Whitfield in Mobile, at 400 Pine Court in the Ravine Woods subdivision.  The bird can be viewed from the back deck; you do NOT need to call for permission.  [DeLorme 62-D3]

A second-year male BROAD-TAILED HUMMINGBIRD is at the home of Laurie Bailey in Mobile, at 27 Kingsway Drive off Bit and Spur Road.  It is being seen in the garden to the right of the house.  Please do NOT call prior to visiting.  [DeLorme 62-D3].
