Hello, this is the Alabama Rare Bird Report for Saturday, March 18, 2000.

HIGHLIGHTS:  Pacific Loon, Purple Sandpiper, and Red Phalarope.

NOTE:  When possible, blocks from the DeLorme Alabama Atlas will be given after the site description, with the page number followed by the block.

A RED PHALAROPE was seen most of the day 3/17 at Twin Pines Conference Center near Vandiver in Shelby County.  This is off Co. 45, best reached from Birmingham by US 280 then Co. 43.  The bird was on the main lake, and tended to move about the lake frequently when last seen.  This probably was just prior to departure, though, as searches in late afternoon 3/17 and early this morning were not successful.  Feedback would be appreciated if the bird is relocated.  [DeLorme 31-F8 -- "L. Lauralee"]

An OLDSQUAW was spotted in late afternoon 3/14 at the Oak Mountain SP upper fishing lake, but was not present the following afternoon. [DeLorme 31-G7]

Three SHORT-EARED OWLS continued 3/7 in Autauga County at dusk.  The birds are on Autauga Co. 21 just east of Autaugaville.  Go south on Co. 21 for about three miles where a model airplane field is on the left.  The owls have been seen just south of the field and fly across the road and along a tree line west of the road.  [DeLorme 44-D4]

A PACIFIC LOON was seen 3/4 at Perdido Pass east of Gulf Shores. [DeLorme 64-E4]

A PURPLE SANDPIPER continued through at least 3/14 at the Gulf Breeze end of the Pensacola Three Mile Bridge; it has also been seen at the Gulf Breeze Fishing Pier.

RBA Update 3-17-00

A RED PHALAROPE was seen today at Twin Pines Conference Center near Vandiver in Shelby County.  Go south from Birmingham on US 280 and turn left on Co. 43.  Go 10-15 miles and turn right on Co.  45 at the Twin Pines sign, turning right again in about a mile at another sign for the center.  The bird has been on the main lake on the left.  It moves periodically to different parts of the lake, so waiting on the near shore likely will produce a close sighting.
