Alabama Rare Bird Report -- Tuesday, May 2, 2000.

HIGHLIGHTS:  Scissor-tailed Flycatcher, Warbling and Bell's vireos, Mourning Warbler, Lark Sparrow, and Yellow-headed Blackbird.

NOTE: When possible, blocks from the DeLorme Alabama Atlas will be given after the site description, with the page number followed by the block.

An AMERICAN BITTERN and a KING RAIL were noted 4/23 at Oakland Marsh west of Florence.   [DeLorme 16-C5]

Two WARBLING VIREOS have returned to Waterloo in western Lauderdale County at the boat ramp.  [DeLorme 16-B3]

At least eight LARK SPARROWS were noted in four fields west of Florence 4/22-23, including Key Cave NWR.  [DeLorme 17-D6]

A MOURNING WARBLER was seen 4/25 in Florence.  [DeLorme 17-C7]

SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHERS have been sighted in multiple locations in the Tennessee Valley in the last week.  One has returned to the Alabama A&M farm north of Huntsville.   It was on the east side of the farm between the main headquarters building and the nearby pond.  Three BOBOLINKS were seen at the farm 4/28. Take US 431 north from Huntsville past Meridianville and turn right (east) at the light onto Walker Lane (called Grimwood if you turn left). Go abut a half mile and turn right into farm, parking in the lot at first building on the right.  It would be best to check in with the farm manager (Mr. Nall), if you can find him, or you can call Ken Ward for further information (256/837-5646).  The North Alabama Birdwatching Society has a field trip to this area 5/6, starting at 7 am, meeting at the farm parking lot.  [DeLorme 19-B8]

A SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHER was spotted 4/26 from US 72 in Colbert County about a half mile west of Cherokee.  It was in a pasture 0.2 miles east of Shell City.   [DeLorme 16-D4]

Another SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHER was discovered 4/26 at Redstone Arsenal at Huntsville.   It was perched on the fence on the east side of Rideout Road about a half mile south of the security gate; though access to Redstone Arsenal is restricted, possibly this bird may wander into a public area along Rideout Road.  [Delorme 19-E7]

A SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHER was seen 4/30 on Gunwaleford Road (Lauderdale Co. 2) west of Florence.  It was on the fence along Gunwaleford Road 0.25 miles west of the intersection with AL 20, at an old stone gateway marked as "Chestnut Hills."   [DeLorme 17-C6]

Good numbers of migrants were noted 4/30 at Monte Sano SP at Huntsville, including two NASHVILLE, five BLACKBURNIAN, and two CERULEAN WARBLERS.  [DeLorme 19-D8]

An excellent concentration of migrants was in the Birmingham Botanical Gardens 4/28, with 18 species of warblers including NASHVILLE, BLACK-THROATED BLUE, BLACKBURNIAN (two), and CANADA. [DeLorme 31-E6]

A YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD was at Dauphin Island 4/29-30.  Call John Porter at 334/861-2120 for details.  [DeLorme 64-B3]

A BELL'S VIREO was studied 4/28 at Ft. Morgan; it was in the Stables woods on the right just after entering the park.  [DeLorme 64-B4]
