Alabama Rare Bird Report -- Monday, August 7, 2000.
HIGHLIGHTS: Wood Stork, Ruff (probable), and Burrowing Owl.
NOTE: When possible, blocks from the DeLorme Alabama Atlas will be given after the site
description, with the page number followed by the block. It would be helpful if
reports are accompanied by these coordinates.
A probable RUFF was seen briefly 8/6 at the Woerner Turf Farm near Lowndesboro. A
LEAST BITTERN, a KING RAIL, nine UPLAND SANDPIPERS, and three HORNED LARKS were also seen
that day; 17 Uplands were seen there 8/4. Take Co. 29 through Lowndesboro from US
80. At 4.8 miles from US 80 turn right at the sign for the farm. In 3.0 miles the
paved road becomes dirt. In another 1.5 miles you reach the farm entrance on the
left at a 90-degree right turn. Please do not walk or drive on the grass at this or any
sod farm. Updates on the Ruff would be appreciated; I have not had reports since the
morning of 8/6. [DeLorme 44-E4]
A BURROWING OWL was spotted 8/5 at sod farms southwest of Foley. Take Baldwin Co. 12
west of AL 59, crossing Co. 65 and continuing another 0.5 miles to a large sod farm on the
right. The owl was seen from the road in the field, but was not relocated 8/6.
There is a large amount of available habitat, however, and the bird could still be
present. Again, please stay off the grass. [DeLorme 63-H7]
A SWALLOW-TAILED KITE was seen 7/30 near the Vestavia Country Club south of Birmingham.
[DeLorme 31-F6]
Ten SWALLOW-TAILED KITES and over 100 MISSISSIPPI KITES were seen 7/29 at Tombigbee Farms
on the Pickens/Sumter county line north of Gainesville; this is also a good area for WOOD
STORK. Leave I-59/20 at the Epes exit (#23) and head west on Co. 20. Turn right on
AL 39 and go north to Gainesville. Turn left on AL 116 and proceed west for about
1.5 miles, before turning right (north) onto Co. 85. Just after you cross the
unmarked Pickens/Sumter County line you will see a sign for Tombigbee Farms on the right;
stop and look to the east for the kites. Another spot is 1.5 miles to the north
where large open fields are on both sides of the road. [DeLorme 34-C/D3]
Thirty-five SWALLOW-TAILED and 70 MISSISSIPPI KITES were seen 8/3 in the western Black
Belt, with the largest concentration along AL 14 west of Marion in Perry County.
Sixty-seven WOOD STORKS were seen 7/26-27 in a drained lake near Marion. [DeLorme
43-A7]
