Alabama Rare Bird Report -- Thursday, October 19, 2000.
HIGHLIGHT: Limpkin, Black Rail, Franklin's Gull, Brown-crested and Vermilion
flycatchers, and Clay-colored, Lark, Henslow's, and Lincoln's sparrows.
NOTE: When possible, blocks from the DeLorme Alabama Atlas will be given after the site
description, with the page number followed by the block. It would be helpful if

Alabama's first LIMPKIN continued through at 10/18 at Smith Lake Park west of Cullman.
Take the Good Hope exit (# 304) of I-65 and follow the brown road signs to the
park. The last bit of the road to the boat landing has been blocked recently, but
you can either park at the barricade and walk a short distance, or turn left into the park

shore within a few hundred yards of the boat ramp, but may also be seen on the opposite
shore. Feedback would be appreciated. [DeLorme 24-E4]
The AOS meeting at the coast last weekend produced several good birds, despite low numbers
of migrants. Best birds were BLACK RAIL (seen two days at the Dauphin Island airport
marsh), MARBLED GODWIT (DI East End jetties), FRANKLIN'S GULL (DI East End jetties),
Alabama's second BROWN-CRESTED FLYCATCHER (documented at the Shell Mounds), VERMILION
FLYCATCHER (Battleship Park near the submarine -- continued through at least 10/16),
CLAY-COLORED SPARROW (several sites on DI including the East End, Shell Mounds, and
airport entrance), and HENSLOW'S SPARROW (two banded at Ft. Morgan). A LINCOLN'S
SPARROW was seen 10/18 at the DI Shell Mounds, and another was at the airport during the
weekend.
Large numbers of migrants were noted today at Ft. Morgan. [DeLorme 64-B4]
A LARK SPARROW was seen 10/11 at Garth Slough in Wheeler NWR. From AL 67 take Upper
River Road east, then Mussel Camp Road north to the Tennessee River. There is a gated road
between Garth Slough and the River, running parallel to the River. The Lark Sparrow
was just inside gate feeding in a harvested field. [DeLorme 18-G5]
The Sargents will be banding at Ft. Morgan until 10/21. Visitors are welcome.

A LIMPKIN was described from Smith Lake in Cullman County 9/30 and 10/1. It was seen both
days at the same spot near Smith Lake Park boat ramp. Take the Good Hope exit (# 304) of
I-65 and follow the brown road signs for the park. The bird has been feeding along
the shore about 100 yards up Ryan Creek, east of the boat ramp. It has been viewed both
times by boat, and difficulty of access by foot is uncertain at this point.
We have no previous records in Alabama of this species; please report results of searches.
If you see this bird please try to make photographs or video, if this can be done
without scaring the bird.
Thank you.
