Alabama Rare Bird Report -- Wednesday, December 27, 2000.
HIGHLIGHTS: Pacific Loon, Surf Scoter, Calliope Hummingbird, American Tree and
Harris's sparrows, and Lapland Longspur.
NOTE: When possible, blocks from the DeLorme Alabama Atlas will be given after the site
description, with the page number followed by the block. It would be helpful if
reports are accompanied by these coordinates.
An AMERICAN TREE SPARROW was discovered 12/25 at McFarland Park in Florence, and was seen
again today. Park at the second restroom on the right side of the road at McFarland
Park. Walk to a large green pipe in the ground and walk along the gravel road until
you reach the golf course. Stop at the course edge (pond on left) and look to the left.
A red flag is on a distant green (not the closer one behind the trees); this flag
is two fairways across the course. The sparrow was along the edge of a weedy field
in front of the red flag, near a slough bordering the field. It was close to the first
stand of small river birches along the slough, and was feeding both in the field and in
short vegetation along the slough edge with other sparrows. [Delorme 17-C7]
A HARRIS'S SPARROW continued 12/11 west of Florence near Key Cave NWR. Go west from
town on AL 20 towards Savannah and turn left on Lauderdale Co. 2. In 4.0 miles turn
left on Co. 223 and go 1.5 miles south to Co. 204. Turn left
(east) on Co. 204 and travel one half mile where you will see a "farm" road on
the right. The entrance to this road is flanked by two yellow signs that read
"Walk-In Use Invited." This road leads south to an upland portion of Seven Mile
Island WMA. Park along Co. 204 here. Down this road a short distance you will
see a large northern red oak tree that marks the beginning of a wide, thick hedgerow that
parallels the "farm" road on the right side. The bird was seen 12/11 near
the end of the hedgerow, particularly in a jeep path near the hedgerow; it is usually with
a flock of juncos. [DeLorme 17-D6]
Eighty LAPLAND LONGSPURS were seen 12/17 at Calhoun Community College near Decatur.
Go north from US Alt 72 on US 31 and turn right at the light near the Hardee's.
Go about a half mile to a golf practice field on the left. [DeLorme 18-E4]
Up to 51 SANDHILL CRANES have returned to Limestone Bay at Wheeler NWR. [DeLorme
18-F5]
A PACIFIC LOON was spotted at Guntersville 12/24 northwest of the fishing pier along the
east side of Brown's Creek north of the AL 69 causeway. A possible phalarope was
seen that day north of the middle of the causeway. [DeLorme 25-A10]
A flock of 50-75 LAPLAND LONGSPURS was seen recently at the Coosa Valley Turf Farm near
Weiss Lake. Please do not walk or drive on the grass at this or any sod farm.
[DeLorme 27-D7]
A SURF SCOTER has been seen since 12/21 in Fayette at Guthrie Smith park about two miles
north of town center behind the municipal airport. [DeLorme 28-B5]
An immature male CALLIOPE HUMMINGBIRD is near Clay northeast of Birmingham. The
homeowner welcomes visitors with advance notice. Parking is very limited in the
driveway of the residence, so please park on the road in front of the home.
To visit call Sue Adams at 205/681-4141, who will also give directions to the home.

Alabama Rare Bird Report -- Monday, December 4, 2000.
HIGHLIGHT: Pacific Loon, Limpkin, Short-eared Owl, Calliope, Broad-tailed, and
Allen's hummingbirds, Harris's Sparrow, and Lapland Longspur.
NOTE: When possible, blocks from the DeLorme Alabama Atlas will be given after the site
description, with the page number followed by the block. It would be helpful if
reports are accompanied by these coordinates.
Alabama's first LIMPKIN continued through Thanksgiving at Smith Lake Park west of Cullman,
but has not been reported subsequently despite several visits. Take the Good Hope
exit (# 304) of I-65 and follow the brown road signs to the park. The bird has fed
along the shore within a few hundred yards of the boat ramp, but may also has been seen on
the opposite shore. [DeLorme 24-E4]
A PACIFIC LOON was found 11/27 near Florence, and on 12/3 an adult LESSER BLACK-BACKED
GULL was seen at the same site. >From Florence, travel east on US 72 to Killen.
Turn right (south) on Lauderdale Co. 465 (aka Amy Drive - first right turn east of traffic
light). This road ends at a lake house. Just before you get to the lake house, turn
right toward the boat ramp. The bird was seen straight out (a few hundred yards)
from the middle of the parking lot. This portion of the lake is also a roost area for many
gulls, and can be very productive late in the day. [DeLorme 17-C8]
A HARRIS'S SPARROW was noted 11/26 west of Florence near Key Cave NWR; I have not had
further reports. Go west from town on AL 20 towards Savannah and turn left on Gunwaleford
Rd. In 4.0 miles turn left on Co. 223 and go 1.5 miles south to Co. 204. Turn
left (east) on Co. 204 and travel one half mile where you will see a "farm" road
on the right. The entrance to this road is flanked by two yellow signs that read
"Walk-In Use Invited." This road leads south to an upland portion of Seven
Mile Island WMA. Park along Co. 204 here. Down this road a short distance you
will see a large northern red oak tree that marks the beginning of a wide, thick hedgerow
that parallels the "farm" road on the right side. The bird has been seen
from the oak to about 250 yards beyond the tree, and also in an isolated strip of Johnson
grass just west of the hedgerow. The Harris's Sparrow was consistently located in the
company of a small flock of Dark-eyed Juncos. Also seen 11/26 was a flock of at
least 40 LAPLAND LONGSPURS in the cotton field just north of the "farm"
road entrance. [DeLorme 17-D6]
A SHORT-EARED OWL has returned to Key Cave NWR. Follow the directions just given for the
Harris's Sparrow, but turn right on Co. 204 and go 0.6 miles. It was seen in the field
immediately west of the western parking lot.
[DeLorme 17-D6]
Up to 51 SANDHILL CRANES have returned to Limestone Bay at Wheeler NWR. [DeLorme
18-F5]
Two PACIFIC LOONS were seen 11/25 in the Tennessee River near the Lake Guntersville State
Park campground.
[DeLorme 26-A1]
An immature male CALLIOPE HUMMINGBIRD is in Pinson northeast of Birmingham. The
homeowner welcomes visitors with advance notice. Parking is very limited in the
driveway of the residence, so please park on the road in front of the home. The bird
is feeding and hawking insects mostly in the front yard, where a feeder also is located.
To visit call Sue Adams at 205/681-4141, who will also give directions to the home.
Single SURF and BLACK SCOTERS were seen recently at West Point Dam just over the line in
Georgia. [DeLorme 40-E4]
Another CALLIOPE HUMMINGBIRD was banded recently near Montgomery, and an adult male
ALLEN'S HUMMINGBIRD also is in Montgomery. Call Fred Bassett at 334/244-0227 for
information.
At least 200 LAPLAND LONGSPURS were noted 12/3 at the Woerner Turf Farm in Lowndes County.
Take Co. 29 through Lowndesboro from US 80. At 4.8 miles from US 80 turn
right at the sign for the farm. In 3.0 miles the paved road becomes dirt. In another
1.5 miles you reach the farm entrance on the left at a 90-degree right turn. Please do not
walk or drive on the grass at this or any sod farm. [DeLorme 44-E4]
A BROWN PELICAN continues at Walter F. George Dam. [DeLorme 54-G5]
A BROAD-TAILED HUMMINGBIRD is in Mobile. To visit, contact the Bullards at
