Alabama's first BROAD-BILLED HUMMINGBIRD continues its winter visit to Mobile. This male bird is being seen at the Coker residence located at 259 West Mount Island Drive. The directions are: from I-65 take exit #3 and follow Airport Road east. In around 1.5 miles, turn left (north) at a traffic signal onto West Mount Island Drive. The house is the 2nd on the right with the landscaped yard and small hummingbird feeders. As a matter of courtesy you may call prior to your visit (251/473-5697) but this is not necessary to try for the bird. You may park in the small circular driveway out front - do not block the main driveway. Feedback on this bird would be much appreciated. [DeAL 62-D3] Both CALLIOPE and BROAD-TAILED HUMMINGBIRDS continue to be seen near the coast. A Calliope has been at the Thompson home (9526 Mosley Road, Fairhope; phone 251/928-6913). [DeAL 63-F6] The Broad-tailed and another Calliope have been in the yard of Jim Dickerson (10537 County Road 99 South, Lillian; phone 251/961-3000). Multiple Rufous Hummingbirds have also been present here. [DeAL 63-H10] Please call prior to visiting these locations. A juvenile PARASITIC JAEGER was enjoyed for several minutes 1/29 off Mobile Point at Fort Morgan. A WESTERN KINGBIRD was reported last weekend near the fort area. [DeAL 64-B4][BGtA p. 22] 2-3 SPRAGUE'S PIPITS were seen last weekend at the Woerner Turf farm in Baldwin County where the species has been present since November. To reach this site, from AL 59 south of Foley, follow County 12 west to around 1.5 miles past its intersection with County 65 (4-way stop). Turn right onto a dirt road (opposite Roy Waters Road) and go a few hundred yards to a yellow wooden post. Park off the road here. Check the patch of longer grass on the left about a 100 yards away. PLEASE NOTE: THE SOD FARM MANAGER HAS GIVEN PERMISSION FOR BIRDERS TO VISIT AND WALK ON THIS AREA. IF YOU INTEND TO WIDEN YOUR SEARCH TO OTHER PROMISING HABITAT ON THIS PRIVATE PROPERTY, BE SURE TO CHECK-IN AT THE WOERNER SOD FARM OFFICE AND GAIN PERMISSION BEFORE DOING SO. THE OFFICE IS LOCATED JUST PAST THE TURNOFF FROM COUNTY 12. [DeAL 63-H7] A female BLACK-HEADED GROSBEAK continues to winter in west Mobile. The bird is a regular visitor to feeders at the Culberson home. The address is 115 Hilltop Court located just north of Old Shell Road and east of University Boulevard. Call 251/344-7250 to arrange a visit. [DeAL 62-D3] The last positive report I have of the female BLACK-THROATED GRAY WARBLER in Montrose was on 1/18, however, the bird may still be in the area. If you would like to try for this infrequently seen rarity, please call Venetia Friend at 251/928-4437 for directions and further information. [DeAL 62-E5] A WHITE-WINGED SCOTER continued 1/27 at Guntersville near the AL 69 causeway. Look south of the causeway in Browns Creek, especially towards the west end near a large parking area and public boat ramp. That same day both GREAT BLACK-BACKED and LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS were noted on the marina pilings behind the Harbor House Restaurant (just south of the US 431 bridge). [DeAL 25-A10 & 26-A1][BGtA p. 259] An adult LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL was seen 1/28 above Wilson Dam near Florence. [DeAL 17-C7][BGtA p. 213] Far west of its normal range, a SALTMARSH SHARP-TAILED SPARROW was discovered 1/25 near Navarre, Florida. To reach the site from US 98, travel south on FL 399 over the Navarre Bridge to Santa Rosa Island. In about 0.2 miles, the main road turns right but you want to turn left (east). In about 0.25 miles this road ends. Walk into the grassy area straight ahead to search for the sparrow. While in the area, you might also want to also try for the BUFF-BELLIED HUMMINGBIRD present for some time at the Duncan home located at 614 Fairpoint Drive in Gulf Breeze. Call 850/932-4792 prior to your visit. The bird is a regular visitor to feeders at the Culberson home. The address is 115 Hilltop Court located just north of Old Shell Road and east of University Boulevard. Call 251/344-7250 to arrange a visit. [DeAL 62-D3] Sightings of the female BLACK-THROATED GRAY WARBLER continued through at least 1/18 at Venetia Friend's home in Montrose. A long wait and a bit of luck may be required to see this infrequent visitor. If you would like to try, please call Venetia at 251/928-4437 for directions and further information. [DeAL 62-E5] A WHITE-WINGED SCOTER was relocated again 1/20 at Guntersville near the AL 69 causeway. Look south of the causeway in Browns Creek, especially towards the west end near a large parking area and public boat ramp. Two SURF SCOTERS were discovered 1/20 near the south end of Browns Creek just offshore from the Sunset Drive water treatment plant. Two cooperative PACIFIC LOONS were seen again 1/20 with many Common Loons just northeast from the cliff and Kiwanis Pier area adjacent to Lurleen Wallace Drive. A FULVOUS WHISTLING-DUCK has been present recently in a marshy area just east of town and was seen again 1/20. To reach the location, follow AL 227 east from its intersection with US 431and just beyond the RR tracks turn right onto Simms Street. The turn is before you reach the pump house and open water. The cattail marsh parallels Simms Street on the left. The duck apparently associates with Mallards. A first winter GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULL was seen 1/21 flying over Ridgefield subdivision in south Guntersville. This (or another) Great Black-backed was reported 1/20 near the islands just west of the US431 bridge. The marina pilings behind the Harbor House Restaurant (just south of the US 431 bridge) may be a good place to check for this and other unusual gulls. [DeAL 25-A10 & 26-A1][BGtA p. 259] A visit to Limestone Bay on Wheeler NWR 1/18 found nine ROSS'S GEESE in with the large Snow Goose flock. Also seen were 142 SANDHILL CRANES. [DeAL 18-F5][BGtA p. 244] The next meeting of the Alabama Ornithological Society will be 1/25-27 at Gulf Shores. Alabama's first BROAD-BILLED HUMMINGBIRD continued to be seen through today in Mobile. This male bird is a frequent feeder visitor to the home of Mr. Russell Coker at 259 West Mount Island Drive. The directions are: from I-65 take exit #3 and follow Airport Road east. In around 1.2 miles, turn left (north) onto West Mount Island Drive and look for the house in about 0.1 miles. As a matter of courtesy you may call prior to your visit (251/473-5697) but this is not necessary to try for the bird. Please park carefully to avoid blocking traffic in the area. When not at a feeder the bird has been seen many times perched in and around a nearby cane patch. Feedback on this bird would be much appreciated. [DeAL 62-D3] In addition to the Broad-billed, the same coastal banding trip last weekend also resulted in captures of at least 40 individual hummingbirds including both CALLIOPE and BROAD-TAILED. A Calliope is at the Thompson home (9526 Mosley Road, Fairhope; phone 251/928-6913). [DeAL 63-F6] The Broad-tailed is in the yard of Jim Dickerson (10537 County Road 99 South, Lillian; phone 251/961-3000). Multiple Rufous Hummingbirds have also been present in this here. [DeAL 63-H10] Please call prior to visiting these hummer hot spots. A female BLACK-HEADED GROSBEAK has been present for several weeks in west Mobile. The bird is a regular but infrequent visitor to a backyard feeder at the Culberson home - morning may be best. The address is 115 Hilltop Court located just north of Old Shell Road and east of University Boulevard. Call 251/344-7250 to arrange a visit. [DeAL 62-D3] A female BLACK-THROATED GRAY WARBLER was briefly seen again 1/6 at Venetia Friend's home in Montrose. This is apparently the same bird that also visited here once in early December. With two brief afternoon appearances in five weeks (and the extensive wooded habitat in the area) the chances of seeing this bird again may be very slim. If you would like to try, please call Venetia at 251/928-4437 for directions and further information. [DeAL 62-E5] A WHITE-WINGED SCOTER and a EARED GREBE were seen again 1/5 at Guntersville near the AL 69 causeway. The consistent location for both birds is just south of the causeway's west end near a large parking area and public boat ramp. Also seen that day was a RED-THROATED LOON in Browns Creek south of the AL 69 causeway bridge and a female COMMON MERGANSER offshore from the Sunset Drive beach area (on the east side of the creek also south of AL 69). [DeAL 25-A10][BGtA p. 259] A visit to Limestone Bay on Wheeler NWR 1/6 relocated two ROSS'S GEESE in with the large Snow Goose flock. Also seen were 105 SANDHILL CRANES. The approximate directions are: from I-65 south take exit #3 and follow Airport Road east. In around 1.5 miles, turn left (north) onto West Mount Island Drive and look for the house in about 0.2 of a mile. As a matter of courtesy you may call prior to your visit (251/473-5697) but this is not necessary to try for the bird. Please park carefully to avoid blocking traffic in the area and view the feeders at the front of the house only from the road. Feedback on this exciting bird would be appreciated. The consistent location for both birds appears to be just south of the causeway's west end near a large parking area and public boat ramp. Also seen today in the area was a RED-THROATED LOON in Browns Creek south of the AL 69 causeway bridge and a female COMMON MERGANSER offshore from the Sunset Drive beach area (on the east side of the creek also south of AL 69). [DeAL 25-A10][BGtA p. 259] A visit to Limestone Bay on Wheeler NWR 1/6 relocated two ROSS'S GEESE in with the large Snow Goose flock. Also seen were 105 SANDHILL CRANES. [DeAL 18-F5][BGtA p. 244] Birding at the Walter F. George lake and dam (south of Eufaula) 12/30 resulted in the discovery of an immature RED-NECKED GREBE and a pair of LONG-TAILED DUCKS. These birds were apparently in Georgia waters but would be very near the Alabama stateline in this area. The birds were observed from a location east of the dam and north of Ft. Gaines, GA. A WHITE-WINGED SCOTER and a EARED GREBE have been present since New Year's Day at Guntersville and were seen again 1/5 near the AL 69 causeway. The consistent location for both birds is just south of the causeway's west end near a large parking area and public boat ramp. Also seen today in the area was a RED-THROATED LOON in Browns Creek south of the AL 69 causeway bridge and a female COMMON MERGANSER offshore from the Sunset Drive beach area (on the east side of the creek also south of AL 69).
