Alabama Rare Bird Report -- Monday, March 18, 2002.

A white, rufous, and black-spangled RUFF was discovered 3/17 at the Woerner Turf Farm near Lowndesboro west of Montgomery. The bird was seen from about 7-8 am with yellowlegs in a small pool under the high-voltage power line crossing at the northeast corner of the farm. Intensive searching during the rest of the day failed to refind the bird. If you want to try you can reach the farm by following Lowndes Co. 29 north from US 80 through Lowndesboro. At 4.8 miles from US 80 turn right at the sign for the farm just past the RR track. In 3.0 miles the paved road becomes dirt. In another 1.5 miles you reach the farm entrance on the left at a 90-degree right turn. Remember: do not drive or walk on the grass at this or any sod farm and avoid driving on wet, muddy roads at this location. [DeAL 44-E4]

Two sightings in this report certainly qualify for the "brief but startling" award! Last week, a female WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL made a single appearance at a home feeder near Trussville. Then on 3/17 an apparent female COMMON REDPOLL made a 10 minute visit to a backyard feeder in Tuscaloosa. Neither bird has been seen again despite frequent feederwatching. Look carefully through your flocks of late winter thistle-eaters - all may not be siskins or goldfinches!

An immature GOLDEN EAGLE was noted 3/15 soaring over Wyeth Mountain at Guntersville. The location is south of AL227 east of the intersection with US431. The mountain overlooks Ridgefield Subdivision and Spring Creek. [DeAL 26-A1]

A ROSS'S GOOSE has been seen recently at a pond in Baldwin County south of Foley. The directions are: follow County Road 10 west from AL59 for around 3.0 miles to County 19 at a T-intersection. Turn left and in about 0.7 miles right onto Carver Road. The goose is at the first house on the right with a large gateway and the name "Cleve-land". You may park out-of-the-way in the driveway and walk back to a wooden fence to view the pond. [DeAL 64-E2]

Both CALLIOPE and BROAD-TAILED HUMMINGBIRDS continue near the coast at the Dickerson home in Lillian. The address is 10537 County Road 99 South; phone 251/961-3000. Please call prior to visiting this location. [DeAL 63-H10]

The female BLACK-THROATED GRAY WARBLER, present this winter in Montrose, was seen again several times this past weekend. The BUFF-BELLIED HUMMINGBIRD previously at the same location has not been seen for several days and may be gone. Please call Venetia Friend at 251/928-4437 for directions and further information. [DeAL 62-E5]

The female BLACK-HEADED GROSBEAK continued through this morning in west Mobile. This was the first sighting in several days so the bird will likely depart soon. This winter the grosbeak was a regular visitor to feeders at the Culberson home (115 Hilltop Court). Call 251/344-7250 to arrange a visit. [DeAL 62-D3]
