Alabama Rare Bird Report - Wednesday, June 5, 2002.

A WILLOW FLYCATCHER was seen and heard 6/2 southwest of Forney in Cherokee County. To reach the location follow Co. 18 west from its intersection with US 411 to a creek crossing just before (east) of Co. 33. The flycatcher was in the willows on the right (north) side of the road. [DeAL 27-F8]

A heavily molted GOLDEN EAGLE was a flyover discovery 6/1 during BBA work in Cherokee County. The location was very near the recent Common Raven sighting: along Co. 28 (Rocky Hollow Road) east of Bauxite and south of Weiss Lake near the Georgia stateline. [DeAL 27-E9]

Six species of shorebirds remained today at the "chicken pond" west of Leighton in north Alabama. The collection included both WHITE-RUMPED and BAIRD'S SANDPIPERS. From Leighton go west on Co. 22 for almost 2.0 miles to a runoff pond on the right adjacent to several chicken houses. This location is just prior to (east) of Co. 63 (Marthaler Lane). [DeAL 17-E8]

A singing WARBLING VIREO was discovered 6/1 south of Bridgeport along the Tennessee River. The location is just northeast of Cameronsville along Co. 91 at the bridge over Long Island Creek. The bird was singing from a sycamore tree on the point of land near the confluence of the river and creek. [DeAL 21-B6]

A trip to Sand Island (just south of Dauphin Island) 6/1 found 12 RED KNOTS and 50 WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS. A feeding SOOTY TERN was noted that same day offshore from Ft. Gaines at Dauphin Island's east end. [DeAL 64-B3 & B4]
