Alabama Rare Bird Report - Sunday, July 21, 2002.

Six UPLAND SANDPIPERS with a few other shorebirds were located today at the Woerner Turf Farm southeast of Magnolia Springs in Baldwin County. To reach the fields from AL 59 south of Foley, follow County 12 west to around 1.5 miles past its intersection with County 65 (4-way stop). [DeAL 63-H7]

Up to six WHITE-WINGED DOVES continued recently at a private yard in Baldwin County where the species has become regular over the last year. From AL 59 in Foley turn east onto US 98 and travel to the traffic signal at South Juniper Street. Turn right (south) and go a short distance to the unsigned alley way on the left just beyond East Orange Avenue. Turn left and go around 0.2 mile to a yard on the left with several bird feeders. The house address is 620 East Orange Avenue. The owners welcome birders to quietly view their yard and feeders from the alley. However, PLEASE respect their request and DO NOT disturb them with phone calls or knocks on the door. [DeAL 63-H8]

A ROSEATE SPOONBILL was seen several days last week on the northwest corner of Little Dauphin Island just north of Dauphin Island. [DeAL 64-A3][BGtA p.16]

An AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN was noted today below Wheeler Dam east of Florence. [DeAL 17-C10][BGtA p. 207]

A good spot to check this time of year for kites and storks is along Pickens Co. 85 south of Cochrane. A trip to the area 7/13 found several dozen each of MISSISSIPPI KITES and WOOD STORKS. Scan areas east of the road toward the Tombigbee River. [DeAL 34-C/D3]

16 SWALLOW-TAILED KITES and many MISSISSIPPI KITES were found 7/13 just west of Prattville along the Alabama River. The observation point was south of AL 14 at the end of Autauga Co. 29 overlooking a hay field. [DeAL 44-E5]

A SOOTY TERN was seen again 7/8 on Sand Island just south of Dauphin Island. The viewing was from the picnic tables just west of the Dauphin Island fishing pier. [DeAL 64-B3] Also seen that day at the USS Alabama battleship park in Mobile was "ole bent wing", the often seen LONG-BILLED CURLEW, and eight dark (PLEGADIS) IBIS flying over heading north. [DeAL 62-D4][BGtA p. 41]

Alabama Rare Bird Report - Friday, July 5, 2002.

An adult ROSEATE SPOONBILL was seen in late June in Crenshaw County with several WOOD STORKS. A search the following day did not relocate this rarity but it may still be in the area. The location was adjacent to AL 106 at a swampy area and bridges about 0.25 mile west of the Patsaliga Creek bridge and Merrill Mill. [DeAL 52-G1]

23 WHITE PELICANS were seen 7/2 on Logan Martin Lake south of Cropwell near Pell City. On that day the birds were seen on the lake east of US 231. [DeAL 32-E1]

Around 100 WHITE PELICANS were seen in late June on the Coosa River at Lay Lake northeast of Clanton. [DeAL 37-D10]
