Alabama Rare Bird Report - Monday, October 28, 2002.

A 1st winter LITTLE GULL was discovered late in the afternoon on 10/27 near Mobile Point at Fort Morgan. The bird was with many terns around 1/4 mile east of the point near some pilings in the water. [DeAL 64-B4][BGtA p. 24]

A LINCOLN'S SPARROW was found 10/27 with other sparrows at the Birmingham Botanical Garden. The feeding flock was on the grass under fruit trees adjacent to the vegetable garden on the north side of the complex. [DeAL 31-E6][BGtA p. 170]

Alabama Rare Bird Report - Thursday, October 24, 2002.

CORRECTION: Please note that the Swainson's Warbler listed by the 10/15 edition of this report on the Wetlands Trail near Florence was in reality a Swainson's Thrush.

Both birding and banding have been very active at Ft. Morgan during the past 7-10 days. Species seen recently near the fort and banding areas include a female VERMILION FLYCATCHER, up to six WESTERN KINGBIRDS, and a SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHER. The Hummer/Bird Study Group continued to increase their banding totals with around 2,500 individuals of 75 or so species ringed through 10/23 including an immature male BLACK-CHINNED HUMMINGBIRD on 10/20. Their fall session is scheduled to end 10/26. [DeAL 64-B4][BGtA p. 24]

Alabama Rare Bird Report - Tuesday, October 15, 2002.

An immature ROSEATE SPOONBILL, originally found at the Dauphin Island airport 10/6, continued through at least 10/13. The bird has frequently been seen roosting with other waders in pine trees along Omega Street and also on the white sand bar just west of the airport in Heron Bayou. Other species of note seen on the island during AOS weekend 10/11-13 included: WHIMBREL, LONG-BILLED CURLEW, MARBLED GODWIT, RED KNOT (8+), LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL, and GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULL (all on Pelican Island located just south of the fishing pier); WHITE-WINGED DOVE (3, Chaumont St. just east of airport) ; YELLOW-BELLIED and SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHERS (Shell Mound Park). [DeAL 64-B3][BGtA p.5]

An EARED GREBE was seen 10/10 at pond #5 in the Mud Lakes Disposal Area on Blakeley Island in Mobile. Please remember that a signed release MUST be sent in prior to visiting this area, a permit MUST be displayed in vehicles parked on the property, and prior notification of your visit MUST be given to State Docks security personnel. Failure to follow these requirements will likely endanger future access for everyone. At nearby Battleship Park, a LONG-BILLED CURLEW was seen again 10/10 on the large lawn. [DeAL 62-D4][BGtA p. 41]

Two WESTERN KINGBIRDS were found 10/13 on power lines behind Ft. Morgan. A CLAY-COLORED SPARROW was seen again 10/12 near the old landing strip just east of the fort. [DeAL 64-B4][BGtA p. 24]

On 10/12 a SWAINSON'S WARBLER and YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHER were found among many migrants along the Wetlands Trail on the TVA Reservation near Wilson Dam. [DeAL 17-D7]

The Hummer/Bird Study Group will continue their fall banding session at Ft. Morgan through October 26 - visitors are welcome! On October 14 the crew banded an incredible 717 individual birds.

Alabama Rare Bird Report - Friday, October 4, 2002.

An adult WHITE-FACED IBIS in non-breeding plumage was seen 10/1 south of Bessemer just west of Smithson. The location is reached from I-459 by taking exit #6 and following County 52 south for a short distance to Greenmor. Turn right and go around 1.6 miles to the Lindsay Loop Road intersection. Continue ahead on Lindsay Loop for around 2.3 miles to a bridge over Shades Creek. The ibis was seen in the flooded hay field on the right (north) side of the road just before reaching the bridge. [DeAL 30-H4]

A BELL'S VIREO was discovered 9/28 in Shelby County near Lay Lake. From Columbiana go south on County 47 through the town of Shelby to County 46 on the left. Follow County 46 east to around 1.5 miles past AL 145. Turn left on County 71 and then right onto Bethlehem Church Road in about 0.2 miles. Follow this road to the church on a peninsula surrounded by Lay Lake. The vireo was in the overgrown woods beyond a fence at the end of the church parking lot. [DeAL 37-C10]

A LINCOLN'S SPARROW was seen 9/28 near Argo in eastern Jefferson County. The bird was near a swampy area south of Advent Circle road between US 11 and I-59. [DeAL 31-C8]

A BAIRD'S SANDPIPER was seen again 9/29 with a few other shorebirds in puddles along the middle ground and old landing strip at Ft. Morgan. 1-2 CLAY-COLORED SPARROWS were reported near the fort 9/28: one was around the oleanders on the east fort slope and possibly another was seen in a scrub area at the east end of the landing strip across the main road from the old stable area. The fall meeting of the Alabama Ornithological Society will be 10/11-13 on Dauphin Island. The Hummer/Bird Study Group will be banding at Ft. Morgan 10/12-26 - visitors are welcome!
