LAPLAND LONGSPURS have made another mid-state incursion to the Woerner Turf Farm near Lowndesboro west of Montgomery. At least six were seen there 11/24 although many more have been reported in recent days. To reach the farm from US 80, follow Co. 29 north through Lowndesboro. At 4.8 miles from US 80 turn right onto County 40 at the sign for the farm just past a RR track. In 3.0 miles the paved road becomes dirt. In another 1.5 miles you reach the farm entrance on the left at a 90-degree right turn. Remember not to drive or walk on the grass at this or any sod farm and yield right-of-way to farm and irrigation equipment. Also do not drive on slick, muddy roads at this site. [DeAL 44-E4] A HENSLOW'S SPARROW was discovered 11/24 on the TVA Reservation property in Muscle Shoals. The bird was with Savannah's just south of Reservation Road across from a slag pile and near bluebird box #3003. The birds flushed from the new native grass field and the Henslow's briefly perched on the chain link fence along the southern border of this field. [DeAL 17-D7] SANDHILL CRANES have returned to winter again in Wheeler NWR where the species has become regular over the past decade. On 11/24 four were seen from the "goose tower" overlooking the Beaverdam Peninsula east of Limestone Bay. As the numbers build over the next several weeks, also check the bay mudflats at dawn and dusk for the roosting flock. [DeAL 18-F5][BGtA p. 244] A FRANKLIN'S GULL was found 11/19 at West Point Dam north of Lanett on the Georgia state line. [DeAL 40-E4] An incredible seven WESTERN KINGBIRDS were found 11/24 at Ft. Morgan along with 1-2 SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHERS. [DeAL 64-B4][BGtA p. 24] A female BLACK-HEADED GROSBEAK has apparently returned to winter again at a private yard in west Mobile. Call the Culbersons at 251/344-7250 to arrange a visit. An adult male BUFF-BELLIED HUMMINGBIRD was recently banded in East Brewton. Call Fred Bassett at 334/244-0227 for status and instructions. [DeAL 57-F10] A female WHITE-WINGED SCOTER was found 11/15 above Wilson Dam with many coots. The birds were seen from the east visitor's overlook at the south end of the dam. When traveling north on AL 133 this is the last right turn before beginning to cross the dam. On 11/16 the scoter was not relocated, however, three FRANKLIN'S GULLS were seen with many Bonaparte's Gulls from the same spot. [DeAL 17-C7][BGtA p. 213] Five SURF SCOTERS were seen 11/12 in Guntersville Lake north of the Rotary Cabin on Sunset Drive. [DeAL 25-A10][BGtA p. 260] Another SURF SCOTER was discovered 11/17 on Walter F. George Lake near the Georgia state line just south of Cottonton in Russell County. From Omaha, Georgia, travel south on GA 39 for around 4.0 miles to Florence Marina SP. The scoter was in the lake just west of this park as seen from the southernmost parking lot. [DeAL 47-H10] Although I have received no recent updates, earlier this month a female BLACK SCOTER was seen just above Wheeler Dam and three SURF SCOTERS were below the dam adjacent to the fishing access area. [DeAL 17-C10][BGtA p. 207] Combined with the reports above, these sightings make November a very active scoter month indeed! A WESTERN KINGBIRD was seen 11/16 in southern Baldwin County. To reach the site follow AL 59 south from Foley and turn left (east) on County 8. There is a Paradise Marine Store at this intersection. Travel 0.9 miles to where the pavement ends and the road turns to dirt. Turn right (south) and go 0.4 miles to a dirt road on the left. Turn left (east) and go 0.4 miles. The bird was actively foraging in the field to the left when last seen. [DeAL 64-E3] A WILSON'S PHALAROPE was found 11/13 in pond #5 at the Mud Lakes Disposal Area on Blakeley Island in Mobile. Please remember that a signed release MUST be sent in prior to visiting this area, a permit MUST be displayed in vehicles parked on the property, and prior notification of your visit MUST be given to State Docks security personnel. Failure to follow these requirements will likely endanger future access for everyone. For details on these requirements call Steve McConnell (256/340-5378) or visit the AOS website at: http://www.bham.net/aos/ [DeAL 62-C4][BGtA p. 43] Reports from Ft. Morgan in recent days include a WESTERN KINGBIRD 11/12 in the dune area south of the fort, an adult GOLDEN EAGLE 11/13 soaring overhead, and a RED KNOT 11/12 at Mobile Point. [DeAL 64-B4][BGtA p. 24] A female BLACK-HEADED GROSBEAK has apparently returned to winter again at a private yard in west Mobile. Call the Culbersons at 251/344-7250 to arrange a visit. The 1st winter LITTLE GULL discovered 10/27 at Fort Morgan has been seen again at least twice since then. The most recent known sighting was mid-morning on 11/2. [DeAL 64-B4][BGtA p. 24] A WESTERN KINGBIRD was seen 11/1 perched next to a SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHER at the east end of Dauphin Island.
