Alabama Rare Bird Report - Monday, March 24, 2003.

On 3/22 an EARED GREBE, immature SURF SCOTER, and female LONG-TAILED DUCK, were discovered at Lee County Public Lake southeast of Auburn. A return trips yesterday and today were successful in relocating this fine group of migrating waterbirds. From Auburn, follow Co. 146 (Moore's Mill Road) for around ten miles to the lake on the right. [DeAL 47-B7][BGtA p. 109]

Both CALLIOPE and BROAD-TAILED HUMMINGBIRDS continued through last week at locations they were banded at last December. The Calliope is in Cullman at the Lamont home (1747 Demorie Ave. NW; phone 256/734-5986)[DeAL 24-D5]. Please call prior to visiting this location. The adult female Broad-tailed is in Morris at home of Andy Anderson home (7977 Country Creek Drive; 205/647-5554)[DeAL 30-B5]. A pre-visit call to this home is not required but would be appreciated.

Around 25 AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVERS and 2-3 BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPERS were found over the weekend west of Montgomery in Lowndes County at the Woerner Turf & Sod Farm. To reach the farm from US 80, follow Co. 29 north through Lowndesboro. At 4.8 miles from US 80 turn right onto County 40 at the sign for the farm just past a RR track. In 3.0 miles the paved road becomes dirt. In another 1.5 miles you reach the farm entrance on the left at a 90-degree right turn. Remember not to drive or walk on the grass at this or any sod farm and yield right-of-way to farm and irrigation equipment. Also avoid slick, muddy roads at this site. [DeAL 44-E4]

More AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVERS were seen 3/18 at turf farms south of Foley along Baldwin County 12 a few miles west of AL 59. [DeAL 63-H7]

The world famous Hummer/Bird Study Group will be banding at Ft. Morgan April 5-19. Visitors are welcome!

The next meeting of the Alabama Ornithological Society will be on Dauphin Island April 18-20.

Alabama Rare Bird Report - Sunday, March 16, 2003.

Both CALLIOPE and BROAD-TAILED HUMMINGBIRDS continue to be present at locations they were banded at last December.

Six AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER were found 3/9 at the Woerner Turf & Sod Farm in Lowndes County west of Montgomery.

A 3/15 visit to Talladega NF northeast of Anniston was successful in locating a RED CROSSBILL where the species has been regular over the last few years. To reach the site take the Heflin exit (AL 9) from I-20 and travel north 1.5 miles to US 78. Turn right and follow US 78 east for 8.5 miles to Co. 61. Turn left and follow Co. 61 for 7.5 miles to FS500 (the road becomes FS553 at the forest boundary). Turn right and follow FS500 and signs for Lake Coleman to a fenced parking area on the right in 1.5 miles. Check the parking area and both sides of the Pinhoti Trail up to a mile or so from where it crosses FS500 just east of the parking lot. Early morning may be the best time to look. [DeAL 33-A8][BGtA p. 184]

The Wilson Dam THAYER'S GULL was last reported the afternoon of 3/9 on flotsam at the southeast corner of the dam. Several attempts to relocate this bird since then have been unsuccessful. The gull numbers at this location continue to shrink with only a few dozen present today.

The world famous Hummer/Bird Study Group will be banding at Ft. Morgan April 5-19. Visitors are welcome!

The next meeting of the Alabama Ornithological Society will be on Dauphin Island April 18-20.

Alabama Rare Bird Report - Wednesday, March 5, 2003.

The female BROAD-TAILED HUMMINGBIRD continued through 3/3 in Morris at the home of Andy Anderson (7977 Country Creek Drive; 205/647-5554). A pre-visit call is not required but would be appreciated. [DeAL 30-B5]

An adult LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL continued through 3/4 at Wilson Dam near Florence. An alternate plumage LAUGHING GULL and a bird described as a 2nd year THAYER'S GULL were both seen in late February. The gull population at this location has dropped significantly in recent days, however, these birds may still be present. [DeAL 17-C7][BGtA p. 213]

A late February trip to the USS Alabama battleship park and nearby Blakeley Island found several interesting species. A LONG-BILLED CURLEW was on the lawn at the battleship park and at Blakeley Island a WILSON'S PHALAROPE was discovered in pond #5 south along with 1-2 WESTERN KINGBIRDS along the west edge of pond #6. Remember all trips onto the Blakeley Island property must be preceeded by a signed release form covering 2003 and a notification phone call. Walk only on diked roads and display your permit in your vehicle. For details call Steve McConnell (256/340-5378) or visit the AOS website at: http://www.bham.net/aos/  [DeAL 62-C4&D4][BGtA p. 41 & 43]

Six RED CROSSBILLS were found in late February during a field trip to Talladega NF northeast of Anniston where the species has been regular over the last few years. Walk the Pinhoti Trail which crosses FS500 just east of the parking lot. Check both north and south of the paved road for the crossbills. [DeAL 33-A8][BGtA p. 184]
