Five WILSON'S PHALAROPES were found 5/7 at Marthaler Pond in Colbert County. >From Leighton follow Co. 22 west for several miles to Co. 63 (Marthaler Lane). Turn right (north) and go a couple miles past the RR track to where the ponds are encountered on both sides of the diked road. [DeAL 17-D8][BGtA p. 211] A WILLOW FLYCATCHER was discovered 5/4 at a small swamp near St. Florian in Lauderdale County. To reach the location from Florence, travel east on US 72 to a point around 1.5 miles past the AL 133 intersection (turn for Indian Springs). Turn left here onto Co. 323 (between Woodlawn Church of Christ and Jennifer House). Travel north 1.4 miles and turn right at an unnumbered, dirt road (immediately past the St. Florian city limit sign). The bird was in the small willow swamp on the right immediately after leaving Co. 323. [DeAL 17-B7] A WHITE-WINGED DOVE was seen 5/7 visiting a private feeder in Montgomery. Birders are welcome to come and look for this bird at the backyard feeder. A pre-visit phone call (334/244-0227) would be appreciated but is not necessary. The Bassett home is located at 1818 Astrid Place. [DeAL 45-E8] A rainy Big Day attempt 5/5 around the northwest corner of the state yielded 145 species including the following birds of interest: KING RAIL, Oakland Marsh [DeAL 17-C6]; 3 adult LAUGHING GULLS, The Point at the mouth of Town Creek [DeAL 17-C9][BGtA p. 210]; "TRAIL'S" FLYCATCHER, Colbert Ferry Park [DeAL 16-C4][BGtA p. 222]; and a male CERULEAN WARBLER, willows just north of Gnat Pond [DeAL 17-D8][BGtA p. 211]. An excellent place to look for grassland species this time of year is on the Alabama A&M farm north of Huntsville. On 4/29 many GRASSHOPPER SPARROWS, an adult LARK SPARROW, and a pair of SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHERS were seen. To reach the farm follow US231/431 north for around 8.0 miles past the main Alabama A&M campus. Turn right onto Grimwood/Walker Lane and then right again to reach the farm. The gate in is open 7 am - 3 pm. Please stop and check in at the office to let them know you're birding.
