A boat trip to Pelican Island (just south of Dauphin Island) 6/26 produced sightings of many gulls, terns, and shorebirds, in addition to a cooperative light morph PARASITIC JAEGER. [DeAL 64-B3] A trip to the Pinto Pass boardwalk at the USS Alabama battleship park in Mobile 6/22 produced sightings of a GLOSSY IBIS and a possible ROSEATE SPOONBILL. Both were located near the small island in Mobile Bay just south of the battleship peninsula. [DeAL 62-D4][BGtA p. 40] SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHERS were noted again 6/17 in Perry County southwest of Marion. Look near some catfish ponds along AL 183 just south of its intersection with County 23. Over 300 WOOD STORKS were also present in and around the fish ponds that day. By the end of that trip over 700 WOOD STORKS had been totaled! [DeAL 43-B&C6] At least one SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHER was recently seen again near Priceville in Morgan County and may be nesting. From AL67 in Priceville, follow Bethel Road north for around 0.5 mile or so and check the fences and power lines in this and nearby areas. Earlier this month SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHERS were noted at two locations in Perry County southwest of Marion. One bird was at the intersection of AL 183 and County 23. A pair was also seen about 0.7 mile south of this intersection on County 23 behind three catfish ponds. Several dozen WOOD STORKS were also present in and around the fish ponds. [DeAL 43-B&C6] 40+ WOOD STORKS were also noted recently in Hale County at the intersection of AL 25 and County 10. [DeAL 42-B4&5] On June 6 a YELLOW-NOSED ALBATROSS was observed at very close range in Florida waters from a charter fishing boat. The location was around nine miles offshore and only one mile east of the Alabama stateline!
