Alabama Rare Bird Report - Monday, July 28, 2003.

Migrating shorebirds are beginning to show at the Woerner Turf Farm in Lowndes County west of Montgomery. On 7/20 four UPLAND SANDPIPERS were present. Six WOOD STORKS were found there 7/27. To reach the farm from US 80, follow Co. 29 north through Lowndesboro. At 4.8 miles from US 80 turn right onto County 40 at the sign for the farm just past a RR track. In 3.0 miles the paved road becomes dirt. In another 1.5 miles you reach the farm entrance on the left at a 90-degree right turn. Remember not to drive or walk on the grass at this or any sod farm and yield right-of-way to farm and irrigation equipment. Also avoid slick, muddy roads at this site. [DeAL 44-E4]

WOOD STORKS continue to be easily found at various locations in Hale and Perry Counties. On 7/20 over 750 were seen from AL 25 at the Williamson Cattle Company just south of both mile marker 38 and Hale County 12. Look only from AL 25 - do not enter this private farm. [DeAL 42-B5 & 43-B6]

A deepwater gulf pelagic trip is being planned for Thursday, October 9, 2003. The trip will depart from Orange Beach, AL, and is just prior to fall AOS weekend. For more information contact Steve McConnell at 256/340-5378 or swmavocet@aol.com

Alabama Rare Bird Report - Monday, July 7, 2003.

The passage of tropical storm Bill remnants last week produced few unusual bird reports in our state. Certainly the most exciting was the CAVE SWALLOW seen 7/1 near the Walter George Lock and Dam just west of Ft. Gaines, Georgia. The Cave was picked out of a large mixed swallow flock feeding over the sod farm fields just north of the Henry County 46 and AL 37/10 intersection. The bird was also seen sitting on the power line bordering the powerhouse entrance road at the dam. A single WILLET was also found on the wet fields. [DeAL 54-G5]

A BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO was heard repeatedly 6/28 just west of Arab in Marshall County. From US 231 in Arab, follow AL 69 west for 1.5 miles to a water tank on the right. Turn right here onto Hulaco Road and then veer right again in 0.3 miles onto Hog Jaw Road. Follow Hog Jaw northwest for 1.5 miles to pullout at a rusty metal gate on the left (this is just past the turn for the Arab landfill). The bird was calling from the thicket and tree grove just south of this spot (GPS coordinates for pullout: N 34d 19.831' ; W 86d 33.226'. [DeAL 25-B8]

WOOD STORKS continue to be easily found at various locations in Hale and Perry Counties. On 7/5 large flocks were seen at the following locations: Rockin' R Fish Farm located on AL 25 0.7 mile north of Hale County 10; farther south on AL 25 at the Williamson Cattle Company Fish Farm; and finally along AL 183 southwest of Marion at both mile markers 6 and 7. [DeAL 42-B5 & 43-B6]

At least one SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHER continued 7/5 near Priceville in Morgan County. From AL67 in Priceville, follow Bethel Road north for around 0.5 mile or so and check the fences and power lines in this and nearby areas. [DeAL 18-G5]
