Alabama Rare Bird Report - Thursday, November 20, 2003.

A male EURASIAN WIGEON was discovered 11/13 at the "willow pool" near the Houston unit observation tower on Eufaula NWR. Subsequent trips have failed to relocate this rarity. [DeAL 54-B5][BGtA p. 84]

The crane and goose gathering at Limestone Bay on Wheeler NWR is well underway. On 11/15, 14 SANDHILL CRANES were seen from the viewing platform on Beaverdam Peninsula east of the bay. Six ROSS'S GEESE and 25 GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE were seen on the bay itself. Up to 11 AMERICAN WHITE PELICANS were also seen during the last week on the bay. [DeAL 18-F5][BGtA p. 244]

A 1st winter LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL continued 11/16 at Wilson Dam in Lauderdale County. An immature CALIFORNIA GULL was seen above the dam 11/14. [DeAL 17-C7][BGtA p. 213]

12 SANDHILL CRANES were found 11/20 near Tallassee. From I-85 take exit #26 (Tallassee) and follow AL 229 north across the Tallapoosa River. At about 2.0 miles from the interstate turn left. Go another 2.0 miles and turn right at the first paved road. Look in the wet weather area on the right about 50 yards from the road. [DeAL 46-C1]

Two ROSS'S GEESE were observed 11/16 in a flock with Snow's east of Pond 5 at the Mud Lake disposal area on Blakeley Island in Mobile. This location is reached by traveling north on AL90 and parking at the last gated entrance on the right before starting to cross Cochrane Bridge. Walk up the hill past a white CO2 tank and continue straight east along the south edge of pond #5. Once past pond 5 continue down the hill to ponds at a lower elevation near a natural marsh. Remember all trips onto the State Docks property at this and other locations must be preceeded by a signed release form and notification phone call. Walk only on diked roads and display your permit in your vehicle. Failure to follow these requirements may endanger future access for everyone. For details on these requirements call Steve McConnell (256/340-5378) or visit the AOS website at: http://www.bham.net/aos/  [DeAL 62-C4][BGtA p. 43]
