Alabama Rare Bird Report – Friday, September 24, 2004.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENTS:

Last week, Hurricane Ivan severely impacted lives, property, and habitat all along the Alabama Gulf Coast. It will take quite some time to return many of our favorite birding sites back to a condition where public visitation is possible.

Due to heavy damage to Dauphin Island’s infrastructure the Fall AOS meeting scheduled for October 8-10 HAS BEEN CANCELLED. Birders who had plans to attend the meeting are urged to donate at least part of their expected travel expenses to an island cleanup relief fund being accumulated by AOS members and others. These funds will be presented on behalf of those who value the island for what it means to birders and birds alike. Send your checks marked “Ivan Recovery” to: Shelly Ducharme, AOS Treasurer, 1026 Dekalb Street, Auburn, AL 36830.

In addition the fall Hummer/Bird Study Group banding session at Fort Morgan HAS ALSO BEEN CANCELLED.

Three BAIRD’S and four BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPERS along with two AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVERS were seen 9/21 at the Woerner Turf Farm in Lowndes County west of Montgomery. To reach the sod farm from US 80, follow Co. 29 north through Lowndesboro. At 4.8 miles from US 80 turn right onto County 40 at the sign for the farm just past a RR track. In 3.0 miles the paved road becomes dirt. In another 1.5 miles you reach the farm entrance on the left at a 90-degree right turn. Remember not to drive or walk on the grass at this or any sod farm and yield right-of-way to farm and irrigation equipment. Also avoid slick, muddy roads at this site. [DeAL 44-E4&5]

Alabama Rare Bird Report – Friday, September 17, 2004.

The passage of Hurricane Ivan inland 9/15-16 evidently left many normally coastal and pelagic species in its wake. Here’s the list accumulated so far:

9/16: BROWN NODDY and SOOTY TERN, Miller’s Ferry Lock & Dam on Dannelly Reservoir south of Safford; a second SOOTY TERN, AL 28 over Dannelly Reservoir. [DeAL 43-H6&7][BGtA p. 66]

9/17: SOOTY TERN, Trace Crossings neighborhood in Birmingham (taken to rehab. Center) [DeAL 30-G5]; POMARINE JAEGER and RED PHALAROPE, Walter George dam and reservoir east of Abbeville [DeAL 54-G5][BGtA p. 95]; BAND-RUMPED STORM-PETREL, Old Creek Town Park east of US 431 north of Eufaula [DeAL 54-C4]; five SOOTY TERNS and POMARINE JAEGER, West Point Dam on AL/GA line. [DeAL 40-E4][BGtA p. 113]

Other species more than 100 miles inland at various locations were: Gull-billed, Royal, and Sandwich Terns and Black Skimmers. Several other uncommon species were apparently storm-assisted and appeared over the last two days at locations they were not seen at prior to Ivan.

A FRANKLIN’S GULL was found 9/17 at Miller’s Ferry Lock & Dam on Dannelly Reservoir. A RED-NECKED PHALAROPE was nearby on a rock jetty just south of the AL 28 causeway over the lake. [DeAL 43-H6&7][BGtA p. 66]

An immature ROSEATE SPOONBILL and over 1,000 WOOD STORKS were nice finds 9/17 in catfish pond adjacent to AL 25 in Hale County near Whitsitt. [DeAL 42-A5]

An AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER and six BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPERS were seen 9/13 at the Sunbelt Sod Farm in Shelby County. On the same day a calling WILLOW FLYCATCHER was found on the farm near the river and an ALDER FLYCATCHER was calling at the second bridge on Dead Hollow Road North northwest from the AL 25/76 intersection. To reach the farm from US 280 in Harpersville, turn south on AL 25 and travel 4.7 miles to the farm on the left. Remember not to drive or walk on the grass at this or any sod farm. DO NOT drive on wet, muddy roads at this site. Be aware gates have recently been installed at all entrance roads and will only be open during farm working hours – typically weekdays and summer Saturdays. Birders are still welcome to enter through open gates and bird but must leave prior to gate closure in late afternoon to avoid being locked-in! DO NOT TRESPASS ONTO THIS PRIVATE PROPERTY WHEN THE GATES ARE CLOSED! In addition, birding group size must be limited to three cars! [DeAL 31-H9][BGtA p. 164]

Two BAIRD’S and eight BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPERS along with 1-2 AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVERS were seen 9/14 at the Woerner Turf Farm in Lowndes County west of Montgomery.

Alabama Rare Bird Report – Monday, September 13, 2004.

The last report I’ve heard about the Shelby County ROSEATE SPOONBILL was from 8/29 and the bird may be gone. Also a new gate was recently installed blocking drive-in access to the spoonbill swamp. If you still want to try, the directions from Birmingham are to follow I-65 south to the Alabaster/Saginaw exit (#238). Turn left (south) onto US 31 and go around 4.2 miles to a gravel road just past the Saginaw Pipe plant. Turn right and walk past the new gate for several hundred yards through the trees and small pond to the swamp the spoonbill frequented. [DeAL 37-A8]

A RED-NECKED PHALAROPE and AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER were seen 9/8 at the Sunbelt Sod Farm in Shelby County. The phalarope was studied for an hour or so before departing not to be seen again. Please follow these guidelines to the letter to avoid all of us losing access to this good birding site. [DeAL 31-H9][BGtA p. 164]

Two BAIRD’S SANDPIPERS and two AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVERS were seen 9/11 at the Woerner Turf Farm in Lowndes County west of Montgomery. To reach the sod farm from US 80, follow Co. 29 north through Lowndesboro. At 4.8 miles from US 80 turn right onto County 40 at the sign for the farm just past a RR track. Remember not to drive or walk on the grass at this or any sod farm and yield right-of-way to farm and irrigation equipment. Also avoid slick, muddy roads at this site. [DeAL 44-E4&5]

UPLAND, BAIRD’S, and BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPERS continue to be found on the Woerner Turf Farm on Co. 12 west of Co. 65 in Baldwin County An AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER was found here 9/11. BAIRD’S and BUFF-BREASTED have also been present recently in good numbers at the nearby Craft Sod Farm just east of AL 59 between Co. 12 and 20. [DeAL 63-H7&8]
