Alabama Rare Bird Report – Friday, December 24, 2004.

An ANNA’S HUMMINGBIRD was banded 12/21 and continued through 12/23 at a home Lillian in Baldwin County .  Several other hummingbirds are also at this site.  The Anna’s is an adult female with several rose-red gorget feathers and is marked on the head with yellow.   The Dickerson home is located at 10537 County Road 99 south of US 98.  The phone number is 251/961-3000, however, it is not necessary to call before visiting.  [DeAL  63-H10]

The RED-NECKED GREBE, first found 12/12 on Lake Guntersville , was seen again 12/20.  On that day it was  just offshore from Lurleen Wallace Drive about 0.25 mile east of the dock.  A PACIFIC LOON was present 12/23 south of the AL 69 causeway bridge in Guntersville.  [DeAL 25-A10][BGtA p. 261]

Three adult WHOOPING CRANES continued through at least 12/21 in a Limestone County field north of Mooresville.  These color-banded birds appear to be part of the 2002 class of captive-raised Whoopers taught to migrate to Florida .  To try and see these birds, follow Mooresville Road (exit #2 off I-565) north away from Mooresville for about 1.5 miles to the town of Belle Mina .  From the railroad track crossing in town continue north for 3.2 miles and turn left onto Humphrey Road .  Immediately on the right you will see a corn stubble field with an irrigation machine.  In about 0.2 mile there is a dip in the field where rainwater has collected.  The cranes have been in the field behind this water.  IMPORTANT:  OBSERVE THESE CRANES FROM THE SHOULDER OF PAVED HUMPHREY ROAD ONLY!   THERE IS NO VALID EXCUSE FOR THE GENERAL PUBLIC TO APPROACH THESE BIRDS.  TRESPASSING ONTO THIS PRIVATE PROPERTY FOR CLOSER VIEWS OR PHOTOGRAPHS DOES NOTHING TO HELP THIS ENDANGERED SPECIES!!!    [DeAL 18-E5]

The Mississippi RUDDY GROUND-DOVE was last reported 12/20 and may have moved down the road or could be gone altogether.  The bird has been in Bolivar County south of Cleveland . To reach the location from US 61 in Boyle follow MS 446 west 9.0 miles to a bridge.  Just past the bridge turn left onto the first gravel road. The dove had been frequenting the area about halfway between MS 446 and the first white house on your right.  Updates on this bird may be found on:  http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/MISS.html

IMPORTANT NOTICE:  The procedure for birding at the Magnolia Springs landfill in Baldwin County has recently changed for the better.  Upon arrival, park near the main office left of the weigh-in office.  DO NOT DRIVE ON THE SCALE!  Walk to the weigh-in office adjacent to the scale and ask permission to enter and bird.  A new bird viewing overlook has been erected inside the chainlink fence.  Please ask for directions to this viewing location.  Managers Jim Ranson and Lonell Peacock and our own Bill Summerour have been instrumental in getting this viewing area set aside and marked with white fencing.  Please thank them if you have the opportunity!

Alabama Rare Bird Report – Sunday, December 19, 2004.

Three adult WHOOPING CRANES were discovered 12/18 and were seen again early on 12/19 just north of Mooresville in Limestone County !!!  These birds are color banded and appear to be part of the 2002 class of captive-raised Whoopers taught to migrate to Florida .  Three more birds from that same year are currently near Winchester , TN.   To try and view the Alabama cranes, follow Mooresville Road (exit #2 off I-565) north away from Mooresville for about 1.5 miles to the town of Belle Mina . Obviously, observe the cranes from the road ONLY!  This is private property and under no circumstances should the cranes be approached.  Many LAPLAND LONGSPURS were seen both days flying around the fields here.  [DeAL 18-E5]

Three ROSS’S GEESE and 263 SANDHILL CRANES were seen 12/19 at the north end of Limestone Bay just south of Mooresville. [DeAL 18-F5][BGtA p. 244]

A RED-NECKED GREBE was seen 12/12 on Lake Guntersville north of the AL 69 causeway and west of Sunset Drive across from the farmer’s market and elementary school.

[DeAL 25-A10][BGtA p. 261]

The last report I’ve seen of the BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKE at Wheeler Dam was from 12/5.  However, with recent heavy rains, the gull activity there and at nearby Wilson Dam has been heavy and the kittiwake could still be in the area.    [DeAL 17-C10][BGtA p. 207]

Three TUNDRA SWANS were seen again 12/9 near Smithsonia in Lauderdale County .  Follow AL 20 west from Florence for around 2.0 miles to County 2 (aka Gunwaleford Road ).  Turn left and follow County 2 west past the Sinking Creek bridge in 8.2 miles.  In another 0.6 mile look on the left (south) side of the road for the pond the swans have been on.  [DeAL 16-C5]

At least 90 LAPLAND LONGSPURS were noted 12/9 in the vicinity of Key Cave NWR west of Florence .  To reach the refuge follow AL 20 west from Florence and turn left on County 2.  In 4.0 miles turn left on County 223 and go 1.5 miles south to County 204.  Look for the longspurs with larks and pipits in this area.   [DeAL 17-D6][BGtA p. 229]

Two VERMILION FLYCATCHERS were found 12/4 at the Glenlakes subdivision and golf course southeast of Foley in Baldwin County .  One or both of these birds may have been at this same location for several weeks.  From AL 59 turn east on County 20 and go around 3.0 miles to the Glenlakes entrance on the right ( Clubhouse Road ).  Turn right and travel to Bunker Lane .  Turn left here and at the intersection of Lakeview Drive turn left again and park in the pulloff just ahead.  Follow the concrete drainage ditch towards the lake and look for the flycatchers in the area around the green utility shed. [DeAL 63-H8]

A WESTERN KINGBIRD was discovered 12/11 behind Ft. Gaines at the east end of Dauphin Island . [DeAL 64-B4][BGtA p. 6]

If your holiday travels take you into Mississippi , you might consider chasing the amazing RUDDY GROUND-DOVE found there 12/14 and seen several times through at least 12/18.  This appears to be the first U.S. record east of Texas !  The bird has been in Bolivar County south of Cleveland . To reach the location follow MS 446 west from US 61 at Boyle.  In 9.0 miles you will cross a bridge. Turn left at onto the first gravel road. The dove has been frequenting the area about halfway between MS 446 and the first white house on your right. Photos of this beauty may be seen at:   http://www.pbase.com/ol_coot/ruddygrounddove

A 1st winter LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL and an adult FRANKLIN ’S GULL were found 11/30 at Wilson Dam near Florence .   On 12/4 the Franklin ’s was picking through the flotsam collected along the upstream edge of the dam.   [DeAL 17-C7][BGtA p. 213]

Two immature and an adult TUNDRA SWANS were found 12/3 near Smithsonia in Lauderdale County . All three swans were seen again the afternoon of 12/4.  Follow AL 20 west from Florence for around 2.0 miles to County 2 (aka Gunwaleford Road ).  Turn left and follow County 2 west past the Sinking Creek bridge in 8.2 miles.  In another 0.6 mile look on the left (south) side of the road for the pond the swans were on.  [DeAL 16-C5]

At least 10 RED CROSSBILLS were seen again 11/26 at Talladega NF northeast of Anniston .   To reach the site take the Heflin exit (AL 9) from I-20 and travel north 1.5 miles to US 78.  Turn right and follow US 78 east for 8.5 miles to Co. 61. Turn left and follow Co. 61 for 7.5 miles to FS500 (the road becomes FS553 at the forest boundary).  Turn right and follow FS500 and signs for Lake Coleman to a fenced parking area on the right in 1.5 miles.  The crossbills were foraging in the pines over this parking area.   [DeAL 33-A8][BGtA p. 184]
