Alabama Rare Bird Report – Thursday, February 17, 2005.

A visit to the Magnolia Springs landfill in Baldwin County 2/15 was very productive with 1st winter ICELAND , GLAUCOUS, and LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS all noted!     Please remember the new visitation procedure:  park at the main office on the left and walk over to the scale office for guidance to the new white-fenced viewing area and visit instructions. Do not drive over the scale or otherwise block traffic! [DeAL 63-G7][BGtA p. 37]

The 1st winter GLAUCOUS GULL, found 2/12, continues to be seen with many gulls at the large pond at Speigner in Elmore County north of Montgomery .  The pond is across the road from Draper Prison.  The location is on AL 143 just north of AL 14 at the town of Elmore .  Three ROSS’S GEESE have also been seen. [DeAL 45-B7]

Both PACIFIC and RED-THROATED LOONS were seen 2/13 from the bridge on the AL 69 causeway in Guntersville.  The Red-throated was south of the causeway and the Pacific was located to the north.  [DeAL 25-A10][BGtA p. 261]

Alabama Rare Bird Report – Sunday, February 13, 2005.

A male EURASIAN WIGEON was discovered the afternoon of 2/12 from the Dusi Overlook at Eufaula NWR.  The wigeon was with most of the ducks present in a flooded area opposite the main impoundment.  [DeAL 54-B5][BGtA p. 84]

A 1st winter GLAUCOUS GULL was found 2/12 with many gulls at the large pond at Speigner across the road from Draper Prison in Elmore County north of Montgomery .  The location is on AL 143 just north of AL 14 at the town of Elmore .  Three ROSS’S GEESE were also seen. [DeAL 45-B7]

A probable GLAUCOUS GULL was seen with many gulls 2/4 at Walker Pond west of Florence in Lauderdale County .   To reach the location follow AL 20 west from Florence for around 2.0 miles to County 2.  Turn left and follow County 2 west for another 2.0 miles to Walker Pond on the right.   [DeAL 17-C6][BGtA p. 228]

Both PACIFIC and RED-THROATED LOONS were seen 2/13 from the bridge on the AL 69 causeway in Guntersville.  The Red-throated was south of the causeway and the Pacific was located to the north.  [DeAL 25-A10][BGtA p. 261]

The last report I’ve seen for the Lawrence County WESTERN GREBE was from 2/4, however, it could still be present.  The grebe has been present at the mouth of Spring Creek northeast of Courtland.  The location is reached by following Lawrence County 150 north from Courtland toward the paper mill.  In about 2.0 miles you will approach a large pine stand on the right.  Turn right (east) onto County 400 just before these trees, cross the RR track, and travel about 0.8 mile to a T-intersection.  Turn left here and continue on County 400 northeast for about 2.0 miles to the boat ramp and bridge at Spring Creek.  The grebe prefers the inlet on the left (north) side near the Tennessee River .  [DeAL 18-D1]

A male BRONZED COWBIRD was seen again the afternoon of 2/6 at the east end of Dauphin Island .  On that day it was seen with other blackbirds in the small patch of woods north of Bienville Blvd. opposite the campground.  Later is was feeding with a cowbird flock near the road at the Estuarium.  Afternoon seems to be the best time to look for this bird. [DeAL 64-B4][BGtA p. 6]

Alabama Rare Bird Report – Sunday, February 6, 2005.

---------------------

In my haste to get the RBA out last night I noted an incorrect location for the 2nd pond near Walker Pond where the Canada and Cackling Goose flock was seen 2/4.  The pond is actually near County 2 on the left just before reaching Walker Pond on the right.  You DO NOT travel a little farther and turn left to find the pond near the church.

I am not suggested you don't check the 3rd pond also, just that no geese were seen there 2/4.  Sorry.

Steve Mc

--------------------

A light-plumaged gull present in Guntersville at least 2/2-4 possessed features of both Iceland and Thayer’s gull and is likely an intergrade.  The bird was seen each day on the pilings at the south end of the US 431 bridge.  The bird apparently arrived around 11-12 noon and departed 2-3 pm each day.  A possible 1st winter CALIFORNIA GULL was also seen there 2/2. [DeAL 26-A1][BGtA p. 258]

The Decatur ICELAND GULL was not reported again this past week following its brief appearance 1/30 with many gulls in the large field across US Alt 72-AL 20 from the landfill.  The dump is just west of Decatur near the Morgan-Lawrence county line. A 1st winter GLAUCOUS GULL was present there 1/31.   [DeAL 18-F3][BGtA p. 237]

The Birmingham NORTHERN GOSHAWK reappeared for several observers early last week in the vicinity and on top of city hall downtown at the intersection of 20th Street North and 8th Avenue North .  One observer also found the bird perched in trees at nearby Linn Park .  Despite intensive searching, I’ve seen no positive reports during the last several days.  Be aware there are also several Cooper’s Hawks in the area.   [DeAL 30-E5]

The last report I’ve seen for the Lawrence County WESTERN GREBE was from 1/30, however, it could still be present.  Up to that date the bird had been present at the mouth of Spring Creek northeast of Courtland. The grebe seems to prefer the inlet on the left (north) side near the Tennessee River .  [DeAL 18-D1]

Four CACKLING GEESE were found 2/4 with a couple dozen Canada Geese near Walker Pond in Lauderdale County .  The flock was at the pond just to the south of Walker near a church. Later they had moved to Walker so a check of both locations is suggested.  To reach the location follow AL 20 west from Florence for around 2.0 miles to County 2.  Turn left and follow County 2 west for another 2.0 miles to Walker Pond on the right.  The second pond is reached by turning left at the next road and traveling around 0.2 mile.  [DeAL 17-C6][BGtA p. 228]
