Alabama Rare Bird Report Saturday, April 9, 2005.
A
male WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL is visiting a feeder at the Kelso home near Rogersville in Lauderdale
County. This would be only the 2nd
record for Alabama! Birders who want to try
for this bird are asked to call 256/247-5364 between 9 am and 8 pm to arrange a visit. Directions to the Kelsos are as follows: from Rogersville follow US 72 east for
around 2.5 miles and turn right (south) at the Oliver Church of Christ. The turn is before you reach the Elk River bridge. In about 0.5 mile turn right onto County 121. Go another 0.25 mile and follow County 121 as it
goes left. In about 0.5 mile turn right onto Sharon
Drive (a new sign has this marked Poplar Springs Drive).
Cross the creek on a small concrete bridge and go about 0.5 mile past a
deadend pave street to the unpaved driveway on the left just past the wooden
Pinedale Homesites sign. There is
a large green mailbox with #113. [DeAL 18-C1]
24 UPLAND
and a BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER were found 4/3 at the Woerner Turf Farm in Lowndes County
west of Montgomery. To reach the sod farm
from US 80, follow Co. 29 north through Lowndesboro. At 4.8 miles from US 80 turn right
onto County 40 at the sign for the farm just past a RR track. In 3.0 miles the paved road
becomes dirt. In another 1.5 miles you reach the farm entrance on the left at a 90-degree
right turn. Remember not to drive or walk on
the grass at this or any sod farm and yield right-of-way to farm and irrigation equipment. Also avoid slick, muddy roads at this site. [DeAL 44-E4&5]
Baldwin County birding 4/2 produced several sightings of UPLAND
SANDPIPER flocks including 30+ in the field on the northwest corner of the US 98/County 91
intersection west of Lillian. Another
location was reached by following County 91 south from US 98 for around 1.0 mile and turn
right (west) on Hagendorfer Road. Around 45
Uppies were seen on the north (right) side of the road about 0.5 mile in. [DeAL 63-H9]
A
SOOTY SHEARWATER was seen 4/1 in the surf offshore of Ft. Morgan. It has not been relocated. [DeAL 64-B4][BGtA p. 23]
An
immature GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULL was found 4/2 on Pelican Island just south of Dauphin Island. [DeAL 64-B3]
61
AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVERS were noted 4/1 at the sod farm on County 61 (Gnat Pond Road) south
of the County 24 intersection at Gnat Pond. [DeAL
17-D8][BGtA p. 211]
