Alabama Rare Bird Report – Tuesday, May 3, 2005.

The last report I’ve seen of the male WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL in Rogersville was from 4/22. Birders who want to try for this bird are asked to call the Kelso home at 256/247-5364 between 9 am and 8 pm to arrange a visit. Directions are as follows: from Rogersville follow US 72 east for around 2.5 miles and turn right (south) at the Oliver Church of Christ. The turn is before you reach the Elk River bridge. In about 0.5 mile turn right onto County 121. Go another 0.25 mile and follow County 121 as it goes left. In about 0.5 mile turn right onto Sharon Drive (a new sign has this marked Poplar Springs Drive). Cross the creek on a small concrete bridge and go about 0.5 mile past a deadend pave street to the unpaved driveway on the left just past the wooden “Pinedale Homesites” sign. There is a large green mailbox with #113. [DeAL 18-C1]

13 HUDSONIAN GODWITS were a tremendous discovery 4/30 at the H. Neely Henry Dam on the Coosa River west of Ohatchee. The birds were standing on a rock pile located offshore from the recreation area at the dam’s east end. [DeAL 32-A3]

On 5/1 the birding was excellent at Ft. Morgan. Rarities present that day were two BLACK-BILLED CUCKOOS, a BAIRD’S SANDPIPER, and a CAVE SWALLOW. A PRAIRIE FALCON was seen 4/24 flying over the fort and then west to Dauphin Island. This ultra-rare raptor has not been seen again. [DeAL 64-B4][BGtA p. 23]

BLACK-BILLED CUCKOOS were reported over the weekend on Dauphin Island both on the Goat Tree property and in the Audubon Sanctuary. A SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHER was a repeat performer at Ft. Gaines. [DeAL 64-B3][BGtA p. 10]

Still another BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO was seen 5/2 at the Monte Sano State Park camp store parking lot near Huntsville. A possible BELL’S VIREO was singing 5/1-5/2 at the nearby Monte Sano Preserve near Fagan Springs. To reach the location follow Bankhead Parkway towards Monte Sano and turn right on Tollgate Road. Park at the apartments. The trail entrance is marked with red rocks near Bankhead. Follow the trail straight ahead and look for this bird where a fallen tree is across the trail. [DeAL 19-D8][BGtA p. 251-252]
