Alabama Rare Bird Report – Sunday, November 20, 2005.

A RED-NECKED GREBE was discovered 11/19 at the south end of Limestone Bay in Wheeler NWR. The bird was refound 11/20 in the same area near many stumps and a small treed island. To reach a good viewing location follow the gravel Arrowhead Landing road past the boat ramp and stop near the first metal gate. For two days the grebe has been around where the bay narrows to its outlet channel. [DeAL 18-F5][BGtA p. 244]

A male VERMILION FLYCATCHER was also found 11/19 and seen again 11/20. This beauty was near an osprey platform adjacent to White Springs Dike road on Wheeler NWR. The location is 1.0-1.5 mile southeast of the gate on US Alt 72 just past its split from US 31. There is a North Alabama Birding Trail stop here. [DeAL 18-F4][BGtA p. 244]

A FRANKLIN’S GULL was found 11/7 on the pilings at the south end of the US 431 bridge in north Guntersville. [DeAL 26-A1][BGtA p. 258]

A light-morph SWAINSON’S HAWK was seen 11/10 soaring over fields at the same Baldwin County location up to four were noted during November 2004. The site is along Sherman Road about 1.0 mile south of County 12 before the intersection with County 16. The hawk was not seen again the following morning. [DeAL 63-H7]

Alabama Rare Bird Report – Tuesday, November 1, 2005.

A WESTERN KINGBIRD continued 10/22 at Ft. Morgan and an ASH-THROATED FLYCATCHER was seen repeatedly through at least 10/19. A BELL’S VIREO was banded in the stable area 10/16 and a second unbanded Bell’s was seen later that day nearby. The Hummer/Bird Study Group field work ended 10/22 with over 1,900 individual birds banded comprising at least 74 species. [DeAL 64-B4][BGtA p. 23]

A female BLACK-HEADED GROSBEAK was discovered 10/29 near the Albright Drive intersection with Alvarado Street on Dauphin Island. Albright is the first residential road north when traveling west on Bienville from the ferry landing. From Bienville, turn north on Albright (no street sign) and go 0.25 to the second street on the left. This is Alvarado Street and there is no street sign here either. The grosbeak frequented the pines in the area and moved around quite a bit. At times it was observed flycatching from the pine tops. [DeAL 64-B4][BGtA p. 8]
