Alabama Rare Bird Report – Thursday, April 20, 2006.
A cooperative BLACK-WHISKERED VIREO was present on the south side of the Dauphin Island Shell Mounds from 4/12 to at least 4/17. An immature GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULL was seen 4/15 on the sand berm at the mouth of the ferry channel on the east end. An adult “dark-backed” gull was seen on one of the Little Dauphin Island sandbars 4/15. A MARBLED GODWIT continued to be seen on the beach and rock jetties west of Ft. Gaines. An alternate plumage RED KNOT was found 4/15 near the end of Bienville Blvd. on the west end across from Vargas Street. Look on the north (sound) side for a large hurricane-formed pool where many plovers and other shorebirds were seen all last weekend. [DeAL 64-B3&4][BGtA p. 6-12]
A possible BROWN BOOBY, that may be injured, was reported to be near the ferry landing and fishing pier on Ft. Morgan 4/19. [DeAL 64-B4][BGtA p. 23]
An alternate plumage FRANKLIN’S GULL was found 4/17 on the pilings at the south end of the US 431 bridge north of Guntersville. [DeAL 26-A1][BGtA p.258]
Three BAIRD’S SANDPIPERS were seen 4/13 at the Bayou La Batre pond. To reach the ponds from downtown Bayou La Batre, follow AL 188 north over the large drawbridge to the first traffic signal at Little River Road. Turn left (west) and travel 1.1 miles to the second sharp left turn. Go straight ahead onto a dirt road and in about 0.2 miles you will reach the diked ponds on the right. DO NOT attempt to drive on the dikes. [DeAL 62-H2][BGtA p.18]
The next meeting of the Alabama Ornithological Society will be held on Dauphin Island April 21-23.

Alabama Rare Bird Report – Monday, April 10, 2006.
A probable male TOWNSEND’S WARBLER was discovered 4/8 in the Audubon Sanctuary on Dauphin Island. This distinctive bird was observed for around 5 minutes before it drifted north with an active migrant flock. The location was along the trail between the D.I. campground and the sanctuary banding area. Subsequent searches have so far failed to relocate this potential 1st state record. A probable CAVE SWALLOW was seen with Cliffs on the island 4/7. [DeAL 64-B3&4][BGtA p. 6-12]
A CAVE SWALLOW was banded 4/8 at Ft. Morgan by the Hummer/Bird Study Group. [DeAL 64-B4][BGtA p. 23] Banding operations will continue through April 15. All visitors are welcome! Please note: this banding effort takes place on fort property so expect to pay the standard fort entrance fee. In the interest of maintaining a positive birder image with those administrating the fort, PLEASE be sure you pay your way!!!
The next meeting of the Alabama Ornithological Society will be held on Dauphin Island April 21-23.
