Alabama Rare Bird Report – Sunday, July 9, 2006.
An alternate plumage ARCTIC TERN was reported 7/5 on Mobile Point south of Fort Morgan. This bird was associating with a large flock of terns and gulls that typical are found lounging on the beach. To my knowledge, subsequent searches have failed to relocate this potential 1st state record. [DeAL 64-B4][BGtA p. 23]
A pair of GRAY KINGBIRDS have evidently nested along the southern edge of Lake Shelby in Baldwin County. The location is near the pay booth to the Gulf State Park fishing and picnic area just north of the AL 135 intersection with AL 182. [DeAL 64-F3][BGtA p. 33-34]
A pair of SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHERS have been seen several times this summer near Big Daddy’s service station at the Bridgeport exit off US 72 in Jackson County. Check the power lines near the station itself and other nearby exposed perches. [DeAL 21-A6]
The following may be called for information: Alabama Ornithological Society: Stan Hamilton (205/951-5630) Alabama Wildlife Rehabilitation Center hotline: (205/621-3333)
Please leave messages about new birds and feedback on reported species after the tone. Sighting information, and requests for regular email transcripts, can be submitted by email to: swmavocet@aol.com

Alabama Rare Bird Report – Sunday, July 30, 2006.
A BAIRD’S SANDPIPER was seen with other waders 7/28 at the Wheeler NWR visitor center observation building pond. [DeAL 18-G4][BGtA p. 240]
A nice set of birds was seen late last week at the D’Olive Creek overlook behind the Shell station on AL 98 just south of I-10 exit #35. On that day PURPLE GALLINULE, LEAST BITTERN, and ANHINGA were seen. [DeAL 62-D5][ACBT #25]
Earlier this month around 100 WOOD STORKS and two ROSEATE SPOONBILLS were found near the Henry lock and dam in northwest Lowndes County. The location is 3-4 miles west of White Hall adjacent to County 40 around the Prairie Creek Road turn. DeLorme labels this road as leading to the “Woodruff Lake” project. [DeAL 44-E3]
Around three dozen SWALLOW-TAILED and two dozen MISSISSIPPI KITES were seen 7/29 near the Alabama River south of Autaugaville. To reach the area go west on AL 14 from Prattville for 7-8 miles and turn left (south) on County 21. Follow this road for about 4.0 miles to where the asphalt becomes dirt. In another 0.5 mile County 21 takes a hard left and heads east. On the right is an expansive grassy field the kites love to feed over. Arrive by around 9:30 to maximize opportunity for a good show. To check out a roost tree, continue on County 21 east and then south at another 90 degree turn. At the next hard left, park and scan the open-crown trees to the southwest. Remember: The fields are private property – bird only from the roads! [DeAL 44-D4&5]
A pair of SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHERS was discovered earlier in the month in Colbert County just south of Gnat Pond. The pair were perched adjacent to County 61 (Gnat Pond Road) near the sod farm. [DeAL 17-D8][BGtA p. 211]
GRAY KINGBIRDS have nested along the southern edge of Lake Shelby in Baldwin County this season. The location is near the pay booth to the Gulf State Park fishing and picnic area just north of the AL 135 intersection with the beach road (AL 182). The adults have been frequently seen perched along AL 182. [DeAL 64-F3][BGtA p. 33-34]
