Alabama Rare Bird Report – Sunday, January 21, 2007.
A bird described to be an immature NORTHERN GOSHAWK was seen 1/18
& 1/19 in downtown Birmingham. Extensive searching 1/20 failed
to relocate this bird. During its appearances the hawk was perched
on the light above the city hall building on 20th Street N and later
on the gold statue above the old Alabama Power building several blocks
to the southwest. Be aware there are several immature Cooper’s
Hawks in the area. Updates on searches for this rarity would be appreciated.
[DeAL 30-E5]
A PACIFIC LOON continued 1/17 in Guntersville. The location was in
the river channel north of Lurleen Wallace Drive and the Kiwanas Pier
between US 431 and AL 69. [DeAL 25-A&B10][BGtA p. 258].
An immature TUNDRA SWAN was seen again 1/20 at Limestone Bay on Wheeler
NWR. On that day the swan was seen both from the observation platform
on Beaverdam Peninsula east of the bay and also in the bay itself.
Also seen that day were three ROSS’S GEESE in the Snow Goose
flock, 600 SANDHILL CRANES, and several LAPLAND LONGSPURS with pipits
and larks in the peninsula fields. [DeAL 18-F5&G4][BGtA p. 240-244]
Another ROSS’S GOOSE was found 1/17 with Canadas near the Waterloo
Community Center in Lauderdale County. [DeAL 16-B3][BGtA p. 227]
An ICELAND GULL was found 1/13 at the Perdido, Florida landfill. This
is presumably the same bird seen at the Magnolia Springs landfill
1/12. As far as I know the bird has not been seen since.
A LONG-TAILED DUCK continued through at least 1/14 along the southern
edge of Lake Shelby in Gulf SP. [DeAL 64-F3][BGtA p.34]
The following may be called for information:

Alabama Rare Bird Report – Friday, January 12, 2007.
A first winter ICELAND GULL was discovered 1/12 at the Magnolia
Springs landfill in Baldwin County. To enter the landfill, park
at the office on the left and walk right to the scale check-in building
to ask permission and receive latest information. DO NOT PARK ON
OR DRIVE OVER THE SCALES AND DO NOT BLOCK LANDFILL TRAFFIC IN ANY
WAY! After checking-in, drive around the scales and straight ahead
to the T-intersection. The viewing location is on top of the embankment
straight ahead – a wooden platform should be visible. There
is currently a gravel road to the top you are welcome to drive up.
Be sure to park out of the road near the viewing platform. IMPORTANT:
once you have arrived on top, BIRD ONLY FROM THE VIEWING PLATFORM
– DO NOT WANDER AROUND! The landfill is usually closed on
Sundays. [DeAL 63-G7][BGtA p. 37]
A CLAY-COLORED SPARROW continued 1/6 just east of Ft. Morgan where
one was seen on the recent CBC 12/30. The location is reached from
just west of mile marker 4 by following the small, paved road north
into a new housing development. Look for a pile of trash and old
truck on the right. The Clay-colored was in the weeds with other
sparrow species. [DeAL 64-B5]
The LONG-TAILED DUCK continued through at least 1/2 along the southern
edge of Lake Shelby in Gulf SP. [DeAL 64-F3][BGtA p.34]
A BLACK SCOTER was found 1/1 north of Dauphin Island in Aloe Bay.
The bird was with other waterfowl at the end of DeSoto Street. [DeAL
64-B3][BGtA p. 6-12]
An adult GOLDEN EAGLE was seen 1/3 feeding on a deer carcass adjacent
to AL 41 at the Dallas-Wilcox County line northeast of Camden. The
bird was last seen flying east over a treeline. [DeAL 50-A4]
A PACIFIC LOON was found 1/5 at Spring Creek embayment northeast
of Courtland. The location is reached by following Lawrence County
150 north from Courtland toward the paper mill. In about 2.0 miles
you will approach a large pine stand on the right. Turn right (east)
onto County 400 just before these trees, cross the RR track, and
travel a short distance to a T-intersection. Turn left here and
continue on County 400 north and then east for about another 2.0
miles to the boat ramp and bridge at Spring Creek. [DeAL 18-D1]
Two PACIFIC LOONS were seen 1/5 in the river channel north of Lurleen
Wallace Drive and the Kiwanas Pier between US 431 and AL 69 in Guntersville.
[DeAL 25-A&B10][BGtA p. 258].

Alabama Rare Bird Report – Monday, January 1, 2007.
An immature TUNDRA SWAN continued through at least 12/26 at Limestone
Bay on Wheeler NWR. [DeAL 18-F5&G4][BGtA p. 240-244]
A 2nd winter LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL was seen below Wilson Dam
1/1. [DeAL 17-C7][BGtA p. 213]
A WESTERN GREBE was seen again 12/29 on Lake Eufaula north of W.F.
George Dam in Henry County. The grebe was again very distant upstream
from the dam. The best vantage point to look for this rarity would
be from the west side of the dam itself. The access road is the
first road east of the County 97 and 46 intersection. The road widens
a bit right before the turn down to the fishing access and there
is room to park. If the gate to this road happens to be closed,
you can also see most of the lake from the dam's Georgia side by
traveling east through Ft. Gaines and then north on GA 39 to the
east side access road. Updates on this bird would be appreciated.
[DeAL 54-G5][BGtA p. 95]
The Gulf Shores CBC 12/30 had around 148 species reported at compilation.
Unusual finds were the male LONG-TAILED DUCK present since 12/28
on the southern edge of Lake Shelby in Gulf SP [DeAL 64-F3][BGtA
p.34], a young MAGNIFICENT FRIGATEBIRD soaring and pirating at Perdido
Pass bridge [DeAL 64-E4][BGtA p. 31], and at least four SPRAGUE’S
PIPITS on a private grown-over sod field near the Foley Expressway.
A FRANKLIN’S (1st winter) and two LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS
(adult and 3rd winter) were seen 12/29 at the Magnolia Springs landfill.
To enter the landfill, park at the office on the left and walk right
over to the scale check-in building to ask permission and receive
latest information. DO NOT PARK ON OR DRIVE OVER THE SCALES AND
DO NOT BLOCK LANDFILL TRAFFIC IN ANY WAY! After checking-in, drive
around the scales and straight ahead to the T-intersection. The
viewing location is on top of the embankment straight ahead –
a wooden platform should be visible. There is currently a gravel
road to the top you are welcome to drive up. Be sure to park out
of the road near the viewing platform. IMPORTANT: once you have
arrived on top, BIRD ONLY FROM INSIDE THE VIEWING PLATFORM –
DO NOT WANDER AROUND!
