Guntersville Dam, AL

Well...it's not the best place for viewing Black Rails. But it's great for hawks, eagles, and shorebirds; especially in winter! It's also a bit closer to Huntsville and Decatur than Guntersville State Park. Here's a photo or two.

Directions

Coming from Huntsville, take Governor's Drive, which becomes highway 431 east of Monte Sano. After you pass New Hope, AL, the highway becomes two-lane, with construction off to the left. Just after Mile Marker 319, turn right onto the Guntersville Dam road and go another 3 miles. In addition to the dam, you'll find a picnic area and a boat launch.
