Guntersville State Park, AL

Guntersville State Park is one of the largest parks in the state system, measuring almost 6,000 acres. It's ecosystem ranges from expansive mountain-tops to still meadows to the large lazy impoundments of the Tennessee River. Bald Eagles are getting to be a more common sight around the river bluffs here. These photos are from the Town Creek area; one of the favorite winter-time haunts of birdwatchers looking for Eagles (what is that in the water??).
Be sure to bring a spotting scope if you have one: it's by far the best way to catch a glimpse (or more!) of the raptors.

Directions

Coming from Huntsville, take Governor's Drive, which becomes highway 431 east of Monte Sano. When you get into the city of Guntersville, take a left onto highway 227; it is well-marked. Continue on about 5 miles and you'll see the park headquarters on the right side just after having crossed a bridge. The hotel complex is further on and up the mountain.
