Wheeler Dam in Lauderdale/Lawrence Counties, Alabama

Another great place for birding, but be sure to bring a big lens! Wheeler Dam is situated along highway 101, leading from Elgin in Lauderdale County to the north, to Town Creek in Lawrence County to the south. There are plenty of places to observe water birds, especially on the west (lower) side of the dam where many small islets afford good spots for the birds to dwell.

Swallows, Swifts, etc. are also present, with many wires to perch on, many being about at eye-level from the south bank observation area. These photos are from the south bank observation area.
