Whats New
With this
new "What's New" page, we'll be putting up more items, some of which can now be
smaller things than seemed appropriate to put on the main splash page. Hope you'll visit
often!
- August, 2000. We've updated the calendar with
most of the schedules of clubs here in North Alabama. Still need to put out the NABS Fall
schedule, though. Also, we have three new areas featured in the sanctuaries area; two great birding spots in Marion
County, and a bit on the eagerly-awaited Hays Nature Preserve in Huntsville.
- March, 2000. Alabama now has a birding
mailing list! It's called AL Birds, and is an unmoderated list administered by Suzanne
Owens for the AOS. To subscribe, send a blank email
to: albirds-subscribe@onelist.com
- February, 2000. Hey! We did it! We came in
second place in our division in the Audubon Website Contest! We've got a nice image out on
the front page for it! :) Next year, however, I'll need to put the website in the
professional category, as starting March 6 I'll be making my living as a web designer
instead of a programmer.
- December, 1999. It's with sadness that we
learn that Valley Bird Net, administered by Wallace Coffey, will be coming to a close on
December 31, 1999. :'(
- December, 1999. The Birding links are back up to date once again. We'll be
adding some new ones soon, also. I have a lot I've been adding to the list!
- November, 1999. Have you heard? Our website
has been included in Jack Sander's new book "Internet Guide to Birds and Birding"
by Ragged Mountain Press/McGraw-Hill (ISBN 0-07-135324-0). Kewel!
- November, 1999. We've updated the newsletters. About time!
- September 1999. Did you know the Alabama Ornithological Society is publishing a
comprehensive birding guide for the entire state of Alabama? The Birders Guide
To Alabama is being published by the University of Alabama Press and will
probably be available by September or October of 2000.
- August, 1999. Tons more in the calendar now, gearing up for fall and winter! We've just
added the NABS outings to the list. Now you can't say "There's nothing to
do..."! Oh, the calendar for 2000 is now
online, also.
- Also, The Birding Guide to South
Alabama is a work in progress, which is being written by members of the
South Alabama Birding Association. When completed this guide will include public access
birding locations in 38 counties in south Alabama. The articles are being published on the
web as they are written and can be found on the website of the South Alabama Birding Association.
We've updated the calendar
with lots of Fall outings, mostly with the Nature Wanderers and the Sierra Club. As you
may know, we try to include outings from a large variety of nature-oriented clubs in the
North Alabama area in the calendar. If you know of any others, let us know!
Check out http://www.pbs.org/whatson/1999/summer/lifeofbirds.html for more information on the upcoming PBS series "The Life of
Birds" by Sir David Attenborough. It starts on July 20th and runs through September
28th.
Rob Biller and Wallace
Coffey have introduced the Valley Birds Net Website to accompany the VBN mailing list! Pay
them a visit at http://members.aol.com/merlinz02/valleybirds.html
Here's Charles Kennedy's "Requiem for a Lost Paradise", as seen on L.A.
Birdnews and Valley Birdnet. L.A. Birdnews is a new mailing list from the South Alabama Birding Association.
To subscribe, send a message to Charles Kennedy at kenwood@alaweb.com
with your first and last name and the word subscribe.
Here's info from Roger
Tankersly, Jr. on volunteer opportunities with the Partners in Flight program.
We've updated a good bit on
the 1999 calendar: added in the rest of the NABS
trips, the Nature Wanderers trips up to March, 1999, the Sierra Club through early
January, plus a few others.
We've added about 20 new
links to the birdlinks and other links pages
A new look for us! We've
totally re-done the splash page, and included four secondary splash pages: People, Places,
Birds, and Resources. And just when it was about to turn December and see all those
Christmas images turn up via JavaScript! Oh well, you can still see the effect on the old
splash page here
as long as your computer says it's December!
We've finished the new clip art bird images; they should look fine with
the new white background now.
